LUMP-NECK

Hello.... I hope someone can guide me with my frustration and concern.  SEveral years ago I was at work and had  reached back to rub my neck.  When doing so I found a Large lump at the right side base of my neck.  Having previously had breast cancer on the right side I went into immediate concern.  I had it evaluated and all said not to worry about it.  Time lapsed and it did not go away.  Then I started to notice changes...  Once it is at the colar bone area and only pops up when I move my shoulder a certain way.it hides below the cavity at color bone and neck.  It is larger than the size of an egg.  I have been thru CT and ENT specialist but they say it does not show up on anythig.  It is not what I would call a hard lump...I have been to an oral surgeon and had a tooth removed thinking that was the cause.  No one seems concerned but my mother is now pushing me saying that I am always clearing my throat and I am having what I thought were just hot flashes but it does appear that they are not normal.  I now have pain that comes and go under the tongue and a large gland that stays swollen....  to top it off I have had severe neck pain and VERY severe headaches which have been passed off as migranes.   I am now beginning to think there may be more here than meets the eye.   My frustration is that no one seems to care...but me.

I also had a CT scan a while back that showed a slight enlarged lymph node located behind or near the lump.   It very well may be nothing.   They said they thought perhaps an infection and put me on massive antibiotics and here I am again 2 years later with changes in symptoms and it has not gone away.    I sing and can not sing like I used to..... all because of what is going on....   I am VERY frustrated and do not know how to make someone do what they need to do.  Even if it is an infection ...they too can kill you if you do not address them.

Does anyone have any suggestions and thoughts about what I have going on...   The more I put all the symptoms down in my mind the more I am convinced something is not right.   As a result., I get frustrated and just leave it alone for long lengths of time until it bothers me again.

To top it all off., when I had breast cancer., I found the lump myself and when they pursued it ...it did not show up on a mamagram ....several days later and several exrays and examines they finally got it to show up an ultra sound....  They too felt it but could not find it.   This is in my mind and now I have something you can see but they again tell me they can not find it on an xray?????

I appreciated your thoughts.....and as you can see,....   I am upset and worried.

Hello,

I suggest that you have your doctor order you a Pet Scan immediately. My cancer (base of tongue) started with a lump on my neck.  Had a CT with contrast and a FNA and was told all ok. Had surgery to remove the lump which they thought belonged to the area of the bronchicals.  Once they got in there a lymph node was found cancerous (just one) and they scheduled the Pet Scan.  After months of going back and forth from family doctor to ENT the Pet picked it up immediately.  I was able to get the area biopsied and was in treatment quickly afterwards.  My most recent Pet came back clear.

Please insist on this test, if the problem is in the head/neck region this is a great way to find it.  And if it is clear, then you can stop having to worry.

Suggest you post on the Head and Neck section of this forum.  A lot of activity there, lots of help available.  Best, D.

Songofjoy,

I read your post and I can definately feel your frusteration. I have had problems with my neck for over a year and my symptoms have increased. I have pain on my right side back of neck (lump removed over a year ago and dr said it was lipoma) It grew back larger in the next 3 months so a surgeon had to remove it again. that was last Dec 2007.

I also have had a swollen lump under my jaw for 5 yrs that never caused pain until these last 5 or so months. The chronic pain is in my throat far up always on right side as well as ear pain on right side. I have had swabs for strep that come back negative. The last 3 months I have had a swollen clavicular area on my right side that you can only see when I sit straight up with shoulders back. It is not hard but fuller and larger then the left side. All pain is on the right side. It has spread to front right neck as well as clavicular area and on and off chest pain on right side. 3 weeks ago my doctor sent me for a CAT scan of my neck with dye. I called dr office yesterday expecting them to tell me they could see the lump (size of marble) under my jaw but the receptionist said my results came back fine. How can they not see this? I have been gonig to an acupuncturist (who was once a medical doctor) for the past month to help with the pain and he has encouraged me to get my reports. I will get them and will be very shocked if they don't mention the lump I know I have under my jaw. Maybe the report will mention the lump under my jaw is benign which is good but I want to know what my options are to remove it as I keep getting increased pain and swelling that seems to spread. I am at a loss too.

I will get my CAT scan results to review. I an happy my doctor has taken care of me with tests but I can't understand why I keep having more pain??? I am going to give my CAT scan results to my acupuncturist to see if he can find degenerative disc disease or something that's causing the pain.

I wish you well. You should push for the PET scan.

Bridgette
