I guess it depends on the type of cancer and how advanced. My husband had BCG for 1 year after surgery and was in remission for 3 yrs. The cancer came back, he switched oncologists, and the 2nd oncologist said he should have done 2 yrs. Now he is doing 3 yrs of BCG because if it. Investigate thoroughly.

I hope everything is going well with you now. You should be getting ready for a follow up cysto if not already had it done. Unfortunately, superficial bladder cancer does have a high recurrence rate but it does not neccesarily that the cancer will progress and become higher grade or invasive. With that said, follow up is very important, as it may progress. Some doctors are now doing more of a maintenence dose of BCG after the initial 6 week treatment at certian intervals. I can't recall the Dr.s name that had introduced this to the medical community but I do now the information is out there on the web. Maybe something you may wish to discuss with your doctor?

Good luck to you!

There is a fairly high recurrence rate.  Some types are worse than others.  I suggest you ask your uro.  DO NOT skip any cystos.  You should be getting them every 3 months for a year, then every six months.  Dr. Lamm is the doctor that has done the most BCG research.  Look at his site for recommendations on maintenance doses.  They are HIGHLY recommended.  If you tolerate BCG without major problems then you should definately follow his protocol for maintenance doses.  It can GREATLY reduce the chance for recurrence.

His web site is:

Another article on the protocol can be found here at the American Bladder Cancer Society wes site: http://blcwebcafe.org/content/view/112/122/lang,english/

Best of Luck to you!
