Viet Nam Vet Diagnosed 7/05

Just got on to this website and I can't believe my eyes. My friend was in Viet Nam 1969-1970. Just diagnosed in July. Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the tonsil. (right side) He is a smoker, but has not drank since 1991. He is 58. We really felt it was because of smoking. (Now, after reading about all the vets in Nam, I am not so sure). In any event, radiation started yesterday and chemo is today. (Radiation 5x per week, chemo 1x per week). He is self employed and we are seeking some help from VA to help get him by. Has anyone else requested assistance from VA? Thank you and wishing you and yours a great recovery. Carla

Carla, I'm not a vet and can not offer any help on that topic, I can be a source for your friend as I have just gone through treatment for squamous cell cancer in my throat. Right near my tonsil on the back side of the throat. Went through chemo and radiation treatment from end of May till middle of July. If I can be of any help on the treatment information side of things, I'd be happy to share my experience. Good Luck to you and your friend, John

Hi John. Thank you so much for responding to me. Gosh I sure hope you are recovering well, what a long road for you. You must be quite a strong person! It took a lot of guts John, congratulations. My friend, Phil, has today completed 3 weeks of treatment. He is not doing too good. He has a tube to pour in liquid food. His tongue and throat are raw w/sores. The hardest part for him is the phlegm stuff in his mouth and down his throat. He cannot deal with it and he sure is getting depressed. I am sure you must have had the same type of thing, can you please share how you coped or what made it better for you? Again, thank you for your offer of help John, we sure need it. You take good care of yourself won't you? Carla.

I was just diagnosed with throat cancer, tonsil scc. Bummer I think. I'm at Salt Lake City VA, but I'll be treated accross the street at Huntsman cancer ctr. I'm 59, three tours of Viet-nam and scared. Radiation five days a week for seven weeks. Got a hole in my throat the size of a golfball from biopsy. Dr. wants me to have all my teeth pulled. Has this happened to anybody else? Thanks, michael

Michael: I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis, it is a bummer, but ya know what? YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! My friend Phil, the Viet Nam vet, also had to have his teeth pulled before they could start 7 weeks of radiation and once a week chemo treatments. He is now in his 5 1/2 week mark. It got hard after the 2nd week but he is hanging in there. I am sure they won't start radiation on you till your throat from the biopsy is healed. Please feel free to write me at caralcona@yahoo.com if you have questions. By the way, what years were you in Nam? What company were you in? I would love to tell Phil about you.

Carla, I am a VIetnam Vet. My cancer is skin. They think they got all of it. They cut down deep on my shoulder. Anyway, I am fighting the VA. They are trying to tell me that it is not related to agent orange. It is not important to me what it is related too. I think it is Vietnam related. I have no one in my family with this type of problem. I have had skin problems since 1966 when I came back. The VA fights everthing. Even when they loose in court they continue to fight the issues. If enough people present Squamas cancer as an agent orange issue, sooner or later we will win. I just hope some of us are still alive at that time. Jim

Jim: Thanx for the message. Sorry about your skin. Yet, I do so know what you are talking about. Phil told me when he was in Nam they would give the guys a small bottle of black acid to kill the agent orange that was actually growing finger like protusions out of his skin. They were all over his arms. So gross. What infantry were you in? The VA knows how agent orange has messed you guys up. I believe some personnel will outwardly admit this. Write back.Carla

I was in Korea (dmz) with the 2nd Infantry in part of 69 and was sprayed. I was with the 11th Cavalry in Vietnam/Cambodia in 1970 and sprayed alot in the most heavily sprayed region....III Corp. I was diagnosed with Stage IV SCC in the right tonsil/lymphnodes in September 05. Finished treatment December 23, 05. I also have Barrets Esophagus. I filed a claim with letter from my Oncology doctor who is world renouned stating he thinks it was caused by agent orange and should be on the list for AO cancers. As he explained, how in the hell do they think it gets to the lungs and other respiratory organs listed without traveling thru the throat. I was denied. Ron
