Dog Bladder Cancer Advice Needed

Hi,  I am hoping for lots of advice from people experienced with TCC.  My dog Misty is a rott/ shep mix.  She will be 11 next month.  3 months ago she was having accidents, no blood, just peeing a lot.  Treated with antibiotics, they helped after 2nd round.  During one urinalysis found transitional cells, next urinaysis none found.  Has had ultrasound.  Found 1cm mass.  Put on piroxicam.  No one told us about side effects, she started vomiting.  We didn't think much of it because she is know to each too much and vomit it up. Ended up having emergency surgery because piroxicam caused an ulcer that ate through her small intestine.  She barely pulled through, but now 2 weeks post op is back to her old self! THANK GOD!  My many questions are is this automatically TCC?  I want to believe is could be a stone, however they did note thickening of the bladder wall also.  I do not want to put her through chemo and we are finacially strapped after paying for her emergency surgery and follow up care.  I'm totally scared to try piroxicam again even with stomach protectants.  I have been reading on here and some people have mentioned Metacam, Meloxicam, and Deramaxx.  Can anyone tell me more about these?  Does anyone have experience with them?  Do they work?  Also I have been reading about k-9 immunity, transfer factor plus, and graviola.  What are they, where do you get then, and what do they do?  Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  I want to give my baby as long as I can without making her suffer.

For the stomach to repair, Aloe Vera juice works great, it easy on the system, works to repair anything internally and is compatible with the digestive and elimination systems.

There is a alternative vet here in Austin, TX I used on one of our German Shepherds that is still  practicing nationally. He doesn't have to see your dog I understand as long as he knows the diagnosis.  He can suggest natural health remedies to reduce or eliminate some symtoms and improve quality of life if nothing else.  If you are interested in further info, he is Will Falconer. You may want to see if there is someone where you are than does the same kind of care.   Detoxing the dog is a must if it can be safely done and you have someone that can direct you.

Our dog had kidney failure and cancer.  We brought him home, were told the best to expect was 3-5 months.  We had him for fourteen great quality months before the kidneys failed for good.   I can sympathize with you on what to do, the pharmaceutical stuff can only make the health of a dog or person worse sometimes, worse than the afflication.

hi Kim the only ones I know about that works is graviola and Pawpaw capules   I know a few people have treated there dogs with bladder cancer and for a while had grate success but it only works for a year or so than  you have to use it again it cost for a course about $50.00 the active chemical is acetogenins which modulate the production of ATP in the mitochondria of cancer cells. This reduces the growth of blood vessels that nourish cancer cells the problem there is only a small amount of acetogenins in graviola and in Pawpaw so the dose of acetogenins in it still to small to do much good for long term as the caps  you get are made up of the twigs and levees of the plant  if you go to this site you get more information  http://alternativecancer.us/pawpaw.htm hope this helps Ray

My dog has tcc and we have done surgery, chemo, and holistic treatments. Since you did not do surgery I assume the tumor is in the trigone area and thus inoperable. Although it could be another type of tumor besides tcc, statistically 90% of bladder cancer in the trigone area is tcc, so it sounds likely in your case. My dog is on deramaxx and she is still cancer free after 9 months. The vets at U of Fl where she had surgery thought deramaxx was as good, but that piroxicam was the drug that is usually used because all of the clinical trials were done with piroxicam. Both are cox-2 inhibitors, but deramaxx is slightly more selective and piroxicam is both cox-1 and cox-2. Intestines express a lot of cox1 and thus why piroxicam has bad side effects on the GI tract.

Hi Kim,

Misty's condition sounds similar to our Elie's. 3 months of accidents, then antibiotics for UTI, then ultrasound.  It took us 2 ultrasounds to find the tumor since this was at the urethra/bladder junction and the pelvis blocked the first ultrasound.  She was diagnosed with TCC on 7/3/08 and we put her to rest 10/03/08, which is basically the best case that our diagnostitian gave us.

Keep in mind that the position of the mass has a lot to do with what you are dealing with.  Elie's was not operable; some bladder tumors are.  We were advised against kemo by both vets.  We did switch to a grain-free diet for as long as she would take it, then gave her whatever she would eat for a week or two. When she wouldn't eat sliced turkey or hot dogs, we knew it was time.

There's lots of info on grain-free and holistic treatment on this board... takes a bit of searching.

I hope that helps some,

Jeff

I forgot to add that we were doing 3 mg Piroxicam/day plus a Pepcid tablet to offset the tummy upset.  We also gave Canine Whole Body Support suppliment made by Standard Process mixed with plain yougurt as long as she would take it.

Best wishes for you and Misty
