Does anyone have any suggestions for treating or managing the extreme pain due to chemo neuropathy in my feet.  I had stage 3 breast cancer, double mastectomy and chemo. I've tried Folic Acid and vitamin B to no avail. Thanks to all who respond!

You could try glutamine supplements. It's supposed to help the body repair damage. I get mine at Target, but a pharmacy or General Nutrition store might have it. I have been taking it since chemo and radiation for tonsil cancer last year. I had pain and numbness in my legs and feet, now just some numbness in my middle toes on both feet. Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Mike

If you haven't already, you should tell your onco you're in extreme pain. There are meds they can prescribe.  I've heard Eucerin Calming Creme can help too.  The vitamin B should be a B complex.  Check with a cancer nutritionist too.  Another gal I know went to the acupuncturist for help.  Make SURE you are wearing roomy shoes w/extra room in the toe box.  You may find you need a larger size than your usual size, also they should be flat or nearly flat so no extra pressure is put on your toes and the ball of your foot.

Best of luck and blessings to you.

Try Zostrix creme - you can get it over the counter at most drug stores. A tube will cost about $20.

The active ingredient in Zostrix is capsaicin, which is derived from red peppers. You could also try what I call "Lemon Volcano Drink" - here is information and the recipe:

I had neuropathy in my feet and hands as a result of Oxaliplatin for my colon cancer chemotherapy. I took L-glutamine, 500 mg daily. I noticed a difference in about a week and after a month it was virtually gone. I finished the bottle and haven't had any problems since.

I had problems also with cold - I keep my feet covered, used gloves when handling cold/frozen items. Drinking cold beverages was a problem also.

The cold sensitivity has also subsided. Good luck

Hi! I had terrible neuropathy in my feet and hands as a result of chemo.  I tried many over the counter products with no help and then my doctor put me on Neurontin.  I took it and it did stop the pain and after a several months my onocologist said that I could gradually stop taking the medication to see if the pain was gone and I can say that I no longer suffer from any type of neuropathy. I also did not have any side effects from this medication.

You have my sympathy! I have had severe diabetic neuropathy in my feet for the past 15 years.  My only relief has come from a combination of Neurontin ( 2400 mg daily) and Methadone (10 mg 3 times a day). I had tried every remedy suggested to me. I didn't know how I could go on. I finally went to a pain clinic at a large teaching hospital. After trying at least a dozen combinations, the Neurontin and Methadone offered me the most satisfaction. I will be having radiation and chemo soon and I am curious to see how these treatments affect my neuropathy. Don't lose hope, there is something out there that will work for you, too.  Keep on your doctor, he is there to serve you. God bless you.
