Unresectable HCC (hepatocellar carcinoma)

Help, my father-in-law was just diagnosed with this cancer.  We are now trying to apply for assistance for Nexavar for treatment.  Does anyone have any information for us?   I did pull up an application for a drug assistance program for Nexavar thru The REACH Program.

I am looking for any and all information I can find. ANY input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ~Brenda~

Nexavar is very expensive, and although my husband's insurance did cover the cost, knowing what I know now, I don't believe he would have taken it.

They are very sick, and continue to decline. Many side effects. Nexavar will only prolong life for a couple of months. Had he known that, and how he would feel taking Nexavar, I think he would have declined. Opting for a better quality of life, even if it meant a shorter time.

Unfortunately, he believed it would keep him going indefinately, and although I knew it wouldn't, I just could not tell him that.

He lasted 9 months from diagnosis, with very little quality from the onset.

Be sure to say all the things you want to say to your loved one, and do it as soon as possible. You will be so glad you did.

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

I have been taking Nexavar for 3 months.  I have also had 2 Cheomembolization procedures, one in April and one in August.  The embolizations have been partially effective in one tumor, essentially deactivating most of it.  However they did not treat the smaller tumor directly other than the Nexavar.  Nevertheless, it has also been deactivated (it's still there but appears dead on the MRI).  I believe the Nexavar is probably responsible for the smaller tumor shutting down.  The side effects were difficult to deal with the first month or so, prmarilly digestive problems and sore feet.  But they were manageable and treatable.  Now they don't bother me much at all.  Hope this is helpful.

Also my oncologist took care of most of the REACH paperwork.  But the REACH people were extremely helpful.  Suggest you call them.
