Sheltie has TCC

I have a 10 yr sheltie (Dakota) who was diagnosed with TCC about a month ago.  He is currently on prixocam, clindamycin and tramdol. Whenever he stops taking the antibiotic he becomes worse.  This is his 3rd dose of antibiotic.  He has symptoms of shivering (not constant), constant moving around, up and down, rubbing his bottom, restlessness.  He will not let me look at his bottom but when I have been able to it looks like yellowish discharge from his rectum.  Sometimes he smells.

My question is this: Have other dogs that have TCC had symptoms similiar to mine?

He is so different now that he has this terrible illness.  He used to play with his sister, run around the house and loved to "talk" to me.  His eyes were bright and smiling.  Now, he doesnt play, walks slowly and mostly lays down, except when his bottom is bothering him.  He is still eating well and drinking water.  The Prixocam is working in allowing him to urinate.

If anyone else has had a dog with similiar symptoms to what Dakota is going through please let me know what worked for you.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Dealt with the constipation/ restless  problem with my forrest as well, on almost the exact same medication regime as your baby, we  found that appox 1-1 1/2 tbls. Of canned pumpkin daily  made a huge difference in bulking and firming up his stool, allowing for much more comfortable bm's. Hope this info helps, good lick and god bless, karen

Your sheltie actually may be having some pain from the diarrhea, as it sounds like the stool may contain a lot of bile, and that is caustic. The pumpkin is an excellent idea, as it will not only firm up the stool, but it will help to neutralize the bile, as well as providing protein and other important nutrients.  Should you beloved pet not seem to tolerate this treatment even with the pumpkin, you might check out using paw paw (or graviola) or Protocel - these are alternative treatments that have been successfully used with pets that have TCC. You can find information on this by doing a web search, key words perhaps "alternative veterinary medicine.'"  I believe Paul Winter, who is an expert on Protocel and paw paw, offers a web link for veterinary treatment.  His website is www.alternativecancer.us  There is a search box on his homepage you could use to find the veterinary info.

I wish you and your beloved sheltie the best.

Sincerely,

Tre

Hello Dakota's Mom--

I'm wondering if you have tried the pumpkin suggestion and has it helped??

I have to agree that the symptoms you are describing do not sound like the normal problems associated with the TCC per se. I suspect the "cures" are making him feel worse.

My Annie has had TCC for a long time now and just recently (the past few months) has developed a UTI that we can't seem to beat. If she's on an antibiotic, she's fine, if I try totake her off of them, her urine turns to the color of wine within a few days.

We're working on different types of antibiotics to see what will work best for her.

Good luck with your Dakota--it takes a lot of trial and error to find what works best for your pup--but I think if you can get his stomach problems straightened out, he'll feel better.

My Airdale was just diagnosed with bladder tumor, TCC a week ago. He's still himself, active and stealing food, just being an airdale.  The only symptoms we see is his bloody urine.  He's finishing up Baytril (antibiotic) and on Peroxicam.  Iour vet doesn;t recomend pawpaw but we stll want to try it as long as it won't make it worst.  If it can be any worse.  What was the dosage of pawpaw if anybody was giving it to their dogs.  Any response will be appriciated.

Dang, so many Shelties with this disease. We lost our Elie in October.

For gastric upset, we had good luck with Sucrulfate, then Pepcid.

Dakota crossed over on November 14, 2008.  A little more then 2 months after he was diagnosed with TCC.  I want to thank all of you that replied to my messages, it was comforting.  Unfortunately the medication that kept Dakota alive was causing side-effects and the medication to help with the side-effects were causing more side-effects.  In the end he was no longer the happy-go-lucky little boy with the loving personality.  I could not bear to watch him deterioate any further.  I am doing a better job of monitoring my little girls urine output, now that I know Shelties are at higher risk for TCC.  I wish all of you a loving Thanksgiving.  Take care, Dakota's Mom

Our Sheltie, Blazer, is 13 years old. He's been urinating in spots for a couple of weeks. Now his bowel movements are few in size and not often. He was diagnosed with TCC last week and he is taking Piroxicam 2.3mg twice a day and Misoprostil (50mcg) once a day (both is liquid form.) Today is a bad day for him. He's shaky and appears to be having muscle spasms. He lays down very carefully otherwise he paces and strains to urinate or maybe pass gas. I do hear small spurts of gas now and then. He has a dog door but won't come in today. Very unusual. Hungry but I've tried all kinds of food and he doesn't even look at it today. We did walk very slowly for half-an-hour this morning, stopping often to strain. Going back to the vet this afternoon. Like you all, we're not after heroics; just want him comfortable. He is such a gentle dear. Thank you for the reminder to be cheerful. They definitely read us always.

How did it go today with your dog?  My wonderful Abbey, a wire fox terrier of almost 11, was just diagnosed yesterday with TCC.  I am devastated.  She acts normal, but they said her tumor is wall-to-wall in her urethra and starting up into her bladder.  She is still urinating but squats often and long.  They will start her on the Piroxicam and pepcid on Friday.  I am wondering if she has had this for a long time.  They put her on Proin 5 yrs ago when she started leaking often in her sleep.  That was about the time she stopped wanting to take walks with me.  I am wondering how long we will have her.  I am thinking we will be lucky to see a month and it breaks my heart.  She is my constant companion.  I am wondering if she should be on a special diet - I keep hearing about cancer diets but I don't know what they are.  Anyone know?   I have to leave on a trip right after Christmas and that was really bothering me, but my vet said that she would board her for me so she could be watched for decline.  Any advice on any meds, diet, etc?  Thx.

So sorry to hear about your Abbey.  We had good luck with the Piroxicam and Pepcid. Also Sucrulfate is a good tummy soother if she will take it crushed up in yougurt.

Once we found out about Elie's TCC, we switched to a grain free diet... EVO worked well for a few months.  Maybe that helped slow down the tumor, maybe not.  In her last month, we just gave her what ever she would eat... deli meat, hot dogs, cereal, whatever we could think of.
