Starting low iodine diet today...again.

I'm due for another scan in a few weeks and started the dreaded diet today.  I get so sick of eating the allowed foods.  During my last quarentine I barely ate.  I couldn't even look at the foods I was allowed to eat.

Does anyone know of an acceptable pasta or rice I can eat?  Can I eat the regular ones?

The key to remember is that it is a LOW iodine diet, not a NO iodine diet. One website I read allowed a cup of pasta a day or some small amount. Check with your doctor as to how strictly this should be enforced, there is a wide variety of opinions out there. You may find some wheat based pastas that may be ok.

I'll be in round #2 in 2009, good luck!

Hi

My husband ate the basmati rice as it is thought to be lower in iodine than others. I got that from the thyca cookbook, I think. It is quite good and in fact we are having that tonight as it's now a favorite of ours. (He is not on a LID at this time).

Good luck to you

I feel your pain =(.  I finished my last LID about 3 weeks ago and I was on it for 6 1/2 weeks.  I have such a hard time on it.  I ate pasta's and rice.  What makes it worse is that you can find alot of info about the LID and all of it will tell you something different.  I think the best thing to do is to stay away from the obvious.  No seafood, no dairy, non iodized salt (kosher is wonderful), no soy products, limit your protein to no more than 6oz per day.  I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t cheat every now and then and I’m sure I’m not the only one.  I’ve done it 3 times in the past 15 months.  Are you going HYPO or are you doing Thyrogen?   We all know that it’s hard.  For me the LID is worse than anything else.  Good luck!!!

This is my 4th time.  The first time I was also on it for over 6 weeks.  Turns out I still had Thyroid tissue in there that was keeping my TSH low.  I lost about 30 pounds during those 6 weeks.  I had my RAI in May and this is the 6 month scan.  I was only on the diet for about 3 weeks in May since my TSH shot up to 90 after 2 weeks off the Synthroid.  I am going hypo again and to be honest, I don't know what the other thing is you mentioned..Is there an alternative to going hypo?
