Hello, my 11 year old Yorkie just had surgery yesterday to remove some stones in his bladder.  The Dr told me his bladder is very infected and inflammed and she noticed a "suspicious looking" area at the neck of the bladder so she did a aspiration of it and sent it off for testing.  Since he has had the surgery he has not been urinating.  They have given him fluids and he is drinking but when they take him out he strains to urinate but nothing comes out.  The Dr. told me it could be a combo of the infection, the inflammation an the likeliness that he has a tumor.  The problem is wih that type of tumor I have read they cannot do surgery because of location.  If it's the tumor that is keeping him from not being able to urinate does anyone know of other options for my dog besides putting him down.  He still acts very healthy and lively an I am looking to help him in anyway I can.  I was wandering if anyone had a similair situation like this where there dog couldnt pee and what was done?

Hi,

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. I have a 16 (almost 17 year old) pitbull who had occasional blood in his urine which became more frequent. As time went on he was getting worse and was at a point where he was incontinent at times and other times he would have an urgency to go but nothing would come out and he would strain to try to get even the smallest amount to come out. Based on his symptoms as well as a urine test specifically for cancer, his vet determined he had bladder cancer. My dog got to the point where he was straining so much that we thought it would be best to put him down. As a last ditch effort, the vet gave us a perscription for flomax (the pill for men with urinary problems). Well it was a miracle. In less than two days my dog was peeing like normal, no more straining. Over four months have gone by since he started having problems and my Porky is still with us. He isnt having any bathroom problems other than occasional incontinence while he sleeps.

I am not saying that the Flomax is the cure, but I know that it worked for Porky. If you and your baby are out of options, I would suggest bringing it up with your vet.

I hope everything works out for you.
