Biopsy First or Oncologist First?

Hi, two years ago I had an ovarian benign serous tumor removed and the only symptom at that time was fatigue and ab. pain. Dr. chose to leave my ovaries in. Started having abdominal pain in april, followed by nausea. It took a while to get medical insurance. Symptoms are constant nausea, pain in right hip and leg, right lower ab pain., constant fatique. Had ultra sound this week that showed a 1.65 cm tumor on right ovary plus dark spots on uterus. Question: do I let my gyn. operate or do see a onc. gyn for the operation even though I don't know if it is malignant or benign. Does the nausea and leg peg increase the chance that this one is malignant.Any advise? Thank you, Shelly

Biopsy First or Oncologist First?

Dear Shelly, To answer your question; when I was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I was having a cyst removed from my ovary by my gynocologyst(sp), and while I was on the table, he had a sample sent to the lab for a pathology report. That's when they found it was cancerous. So they had an oncologist come in to do a complete hysterectomy. After reading about your symptoms, I would recommend you go to an oncologist or at least a group of women's doctors that have some oncologists on staff just to be on the safe side. If it is cancer an oncologist needs to be there so you'll have a better chance of getting all the cancer cells. I'm not saying they will, but an oncologist will have more experience with cancer than a regular gyn. Good luck and hope things turn out ok. Peggy

Thank You

Hi! I would greatly recommend seeking out a "gynecological oncologist". This way he is a gyn doctor who can perform the biopsy/surgery and yet specializes in oncology (cancer). Most patients have a better result with this type of doctor. I have been battling stage 3 ovarian cancer for 5 years ... and I feel I am doing as well as I have due to my excellent surgeon! I wish you the best of luck! - DLB
