Scared and New to Liver cancer

We just received the results to my father in law's PET scan. He has approximately 1 year with treatment and 6 months without treatment. In the dark is the scariest thing. First they removed a mass in his colon and the pathologist report indicated no cancer. but the PET scan was positive.  Can they do a liver transplant? how is successful is it? are there special diets to slow this down? can the medications be administered at one time or are they time released?  We are not confidant in any of the doctors at this point. All tests seem to be conflicting. The family is so emotional that no one is getting proper rest to even think clearly. I need to help my family but I also lack the resources. I believe God is Good and God is the Healer of all Healers. I believe this one is bigger than us. But, I need help just pointed in the right direction. My mother in law is little help at this time. He is still pending prostate cancer. Is anyone out there that can help point me? even just to scripture? I speak into existence that my father in law will be healed. There is no way this man is going to die this way. Please help me support the family would be a big help. My prayers are out there for everyone with this.  I know this seems so shallow for those who have had this and who have done their research. I know I was led here for a reason. Amen.

Hi butter.. well first off let me say i am sorry for this time of trial you are going through.. u know about god.. there are 2 times to praise him.. when you feel like it and when you dont!!! remember to repeat that to your family.. another thing that i loved about your post.. u are positive...and head strong.. what about the father in law...is he ready to fight for his life?... ok... umm being a nurse.. i can say this.. that transplants are always possible.. but if the person is really older and if they have cancer most organizations wont give them one because it is considered a waste... now what your family may think of is giving part of your liver....... you know a healthy person can live with just a 1/3 of their liver because its like a lizards tail... when removed it grows back. now.. on the other hand a cancerous liver will not.. it is deadened... so again.. look around.. where are you all at. state wise?.. also what about his health coverage? get back with me or email me at

Butter,

I kind of know how you feel.  I was diagnosed with inoperable primary liver cancer last January and it's been a wild and scary ride since then.  I'll offer a few things I have found along the way.  You will be very lucky if you ever find a doctor upon whom you can rely to completely manage this illness for your loved one.  It will be up to you to step up to the plate, learn as much as you can, and figure out what needs to be done, by whom, and when.  Doctors are just one resource you call into play as you need them.  Very few folks get cured of this disease.  Only 10% or so are eligible for transplants and/or surgical removal of the tumors.  The best most of us can do is try to manage the disease and extend our lives as much as we can.  Fortunately there are lots of treaments available and more becoming so: chemoembolization radio frequency ablation, stereotactic radiosurgery, Nexavar, etc.  Google these and get as smart as you can about them.  I have found that taking things one day, one week, one month at a time is a healthy way to approach it.  What can you constructively do today, this week, etc. to mamage the illness.  The internet is a vast resource and can help immeasurably in this.  Most of all pur your trust in God.

Butter:

I was diagnosed with primary liver cancer two years ago from this coming January. A portion of my liver was removed at that time, however, a year later the cancer returned. I have received a Therasphere treatment and several chemoembolization treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I don't know what type of insurance your father-in-law has, but I would strongly suggest you get him to a place like Mayo or M.D. Anderson in Houston. Local doctors really don't have a clue how to treat live cancer. You need to be where they specialize in the disease and are privy to all the latest treatments and experimental treatments. Don't delay, as the faster you act, the better your chances. My prayers are with you and your family.

God Bless!
