my mom recently found a polyp in her gallbladder and had the entire gallbladder removed with laproscopy... now the biopsy results are in and the doctor says that it's stage 2 gallbladder cancer. what does this mean?! i've read that stage 2 is when the cancer has spread to the gallbladder lining but no other organs. which seems like since the gallbladder is out anyway shouldn't it be fine? but then i also read that only 20% of stage 2 gallbladder patients survive. i'm having such a hard time... if anyone knows what the treatment options are from here on out or if she has to have a bigger surgery... or if this means ... no i won't say it~ please can someone help me....
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. My mom was diagnosed with Stage 2 GBC on September 30, 2008 after having the gall bladder removed because she had gall stones. No one knew there was a 2 cm tumor in there. Three days ago she underwent a liver resection to remove any traces of the cancer cells in the liver and/or lymph nodes. More people have success with this type of surgery and their long term survival rates are better than assuming the cancer has been removed with the gall bladder alone. The gall bladder (like the liver) is a very bloody organ and cancer cells travel through organs, the lymph system and blood stream to other parts of the body. We wanted to be aggressive and not leave anything behind to re-grow in or on another organ. Mom is doing well - recovery will be slow. Part of the side effects of liver resection is fatigue.
She is being treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in NY and there are not enough words to describe how wonderful her experience has been. Unfortunately the pathology report will not be back for 7 days and that is the true indicator if the cancer is totally gone or not. Our doctor gave us the best advice ever..............do your research on the internet, talk to people, meet with at least 2 doctors and DON'T pay attention to the statistics. Everyone is different and can't be held to the same standard. The numbers for GBC can be scary - but believe in your mom and yourself and always keep a good attitude. Good luck to you and stay positive!!!
