RCC secondary tumour 11 years later

Just wondered if anyone else is in or has been in this situation.  I had my left kidney removed 11 years ago.  The tumour was totally encapsulated, stage 1, clear cell, had not spread & the doctor said I was cured.  I was followed for 5 years.  In Sept. something showed up on a chest x-ray & I had a biopsy done 2 weeks ago & go for the final results this Tues. but I know my answer because I am seeing a urologist/oncologist.  It is not in the lung or on the lung so I hope that is a good thing & all my initial tests & scans & ultrasounds only show the one spot.  Would like to hear of anyone else who was cancer free (cured) for this long.

Joanne, I think the longest I've heard of is l6 years cancer free and then it came back. I'm sorry to hear it has, but would seek to reassure you that cancer treatment for secondary cancer has moved on immensely since you first had RCC eleven years ago.

Not only are there a range of sophisticated techniques such as cyber knife radiation and cryoablation etc, there are also a raft of new powerful drugs as well. So things are a lot brighter than they used to be,.

Your experience is a sobering reminder that once you have cancer, any 'cure' may always be temporary, and vigilence is always required. It sounds like you have caught this 'Return of the Beast' at a much earlier stage than often happens, and I wish you all the best for whatever treatment you go for. Do read up as much as you can, to catch up with the latest possibilities.

As you will doubtless remember from the first time around, it's very important to have an oncologist who is an RCC specialist, as it's a cancer that has its own requirements.

Finally, you might like to join kidney-onc mailing list, which has a treasure trove of information and experience, and which I have found invaluable in respect of my husbands Stage IV RCC. You can join on (whoops, sorry, I'm on the wrong computer - I'll have to post the contact details later, though you can find them in earlier posts here).

All the very best, and hope your consutlation goes positively.

Thank you Julie.  I have been doing losts of research since Sept. when I had the first x-ray done & have gained lots of knowledge & know that things have come a long way since 11 years ago.  I'm in ontario, canada so we probably don't have some of the treatments you mentioned.  I will beat this again!!!

Had my doctor appt. yesterday & confirmed what I knew.  Surgery is not an option right now.  Will be starting Sutent hopefully in a couple of weeks & down the road if it shrinks enough they may be able to do surgery.  I have an amazing Dr. & he is so positive which keeps me very positive.

If you join the KIDNEY-ONC email list (see http://cancerguide.org/kofaq/  ) you will find several people who have gone many years before kidney cancer reared it's ugly head again.

Where is the met?  You said it is not in the lung, and that surgery is not an option now.  If Sutent can shrink the met, and surgery becomes on option, consider it seriously.  Surgery is usually the best treatment for mets if it can remove them all.

The secondary tumour is between the lung & pulmonary artery.  And when the Sutent shrinks it & it can be removed safely it will be done.  So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hello,

What became of your treatment? My mother's story is very similar to yours. 11 year DFI after a complete nephrectomy.

My mother just had surgery to remove her mets in her chest cavity and lung.  Her recovery is going very well and she feels better every day. At this point, while her prognosis is not a cure, the doctors are very positive about her future.  I hope your progress is just as positive, your stories sound quite similar.
