oncotypedx testing

Good Morning,

I went to see my oncologist for the first time yesterday, he was recommended by my surgeon.  I had two lumpectomies within 4 weeks.

The oncologist want to have a oncotypedx test done to determine which

treatment is the best way to go.  I was under the assumption that I

just needed radiology and I am done.  Now he is throwing in the

possibility of chemo, which scares the heck out of me because of so many side effects, not so much the hair loss part but all the other stuff.

I would like to hear from anyone who has heard about this oncotypedx testing, I know it is fairly new.  Thank you and god bless

From what I know the oncotyping looks at characteristics of your genes or tumor tissue to predict the rate of recurrence. I'd take the test if I were you. You always have the final word about your treatment.

My sister just had this test done and it indicated that radiation alone would be enough for treatment.  However, the test is so new, there is a little trepidation about trusting the results.   From my understanding, this test has only JUST become available so nothing on the message boards about how comfortable people are with the results.  Anyone out there had this test?  What do you think?

Thanks for your reply about the oncotypedx testing, it is good to know

that someone else has had this test.  Happy to hear that your sister

can do with radiation only.  Did your sister have the lumpectomy?

Do you know what kind of breast cancer she has?  On me they removed

two tumors, no lymph nodes involved, which is a good sign.  A am just

so nervouse about the waiting all the time.  Now I have to wait another

two weeks to hear whether I need chemo or not.

Good luck to your sister and god bless.

Hi,

She had a lumpectomy - 3 small areas were removed--Just a couple of breast lymph nodes involved but none under the arm.  She has had her annual mammogram every year.  However, she found a lump in the left breast that led her Dr to order further tests on both breasts which uncovered the lumps in the right breast.  Pretty scary how fast that was growing.  My husband is also fighting renal cancer so waiting for everything is pretty common.  Just put it aside in your mind for now and await the results and deal with it then.  Best of luck to you!  If you are a reader, I highly recommend The Shack.  I would never have read it if someone hadn't recommended it to me--didn't look like my kind of book but it's pretty awesome.

 Hi Bookmum,

It sounds like are not going through a good time in your life and I

hope that all goes well with your husband also.  When it rains it

pours and you can certainly attest to that.

Thanks for all the info and I will certainly get The Shack, I know I will

find plenty of time to read once everything gets started.

Lots of good luck to your and your family.

Monika

Monique,

I am curius as to whether or not you took the test.  I did and received a score of 26 this week.  I think the doctor is going to recommend chemo, but I am not sure that I will take it.  Anyone out there with recommendations?

Hi,

Yes, I had the oncotypedx test done in December. I was fortunate

and my score was a 6, so I started the radiation treatment in January.

A 26 is very high, and if I were you I would most definitely have the

chemo and the radiation after that.  My oncologist had told me

that anything over a 15 he would recommend both and you are much

higher then that.  We are lucky that they gave us the option to take this this test.  So please listen to your doctors.

Let me know what you decide and I hope and pray that all goes

well for you.
