Hello:

I went through high dose IL-2 for renal cell. It is done in a hospital setting in which the cytokine is infused through a central line. It is done only in a handfull of institutions. (I had mine done at Roswell). It demands good physical health and spiritual determination because it is very toxic and puts great demands on the body. The success rate is very low, but to my knowledge, it is the only treatment that can provide a durable response. (Meaning a dramatic response)

Unfortunately, it did not work for me, so I must move on to other treatments. Would I have done it again? Yes, to have a shot at a durable response. Would I recommend it to others? That is a personel decision that you and your doctor must make.

To my understanding, you can incease your odds with this immunotherapy if your cancer has certain markers, such as CA-IX and having clear cell histology.

To my knowledge, IL-2 can also be given at low dose, though the response is not as dramatic.

I hope this helps,  Krys

To find others who have had interleukin treatment, join the Kidney-Onc email support list  (see http://cancerguide.org/kofaq/  ).

Krys,

Thanks for the information it helps alot. We have another cat-scan in a few weeks and if the tumors have not decreased the Dr is talking about putting my husband on small doses of interferon. We talked earlier to the Doctor about Interluekin and he suggested it. We decided not to do that right now but left it open for a option. I am not for the treatment at all my husband is. From what I have read it has bad side effects including death. And not much success. But if it does work and you live through that it can be a cure.

I wish you all the best

God Bless

SC
