My husband was diagnosed with rcc in Aug.2005. He had a tumor in his brain that hemorraged and had to have emergency surgery. Three days later they said it was cancer and he also had another smaller tumor in the left front side of his brain that they needed to take out. During all this is when we found out he had a grape-fruit sized tumor (14 cm) in his right kidney. Without surgery to remove the kidney he has no more than 6 months, even with the surgery they said it may lengthen his time but they don't know what his quality of life will be. After recuperation from the surgery they want to start him on Sorafenib. Has anyone tried this yet? What have been the side effects and the results. It is so new. We're still in a state of shock, but God will sustain us no matter what the outcome. Please respond if anyone knows about sorafenib.

Sorafenib is not yet available, so it sounds like your husband has been placed in a clinical trial. This drug is being investigated in advanced kidney cancer and has been well tolerated and significantly delayed disease progression in trials. Sorafenib is the first drug to target 2 different signaling pathways involved in tumor blood vessel growth. Its definately worth a try.
Your trust in God is wise. Keep praying and God bless.

I was started on Sorafenib in the third week of September. After a week, I developed a side effect called Hand-Foot Syndrom. I had no symptoms on my hand but on my both feet. The pain was keeping me away from walking or even standing on my feet. My treatment was stopped. After a week, the symptoms were bearable so I am back on the treatment. I hope the symptoms do not come back.

Thank you for responding as I have not had any others. My husband is due to start on it as soon as he has another CT of his kidney and lungs. It should be within the week. I pray your hand-foot syndrome doesn't start back. Did you have the rash on your face or have fever and chills? That is something we have been told to expect. I would enjoy corresponding with you via email to see how you do as well as tell you how my husband does on it. If you would like to correspond directly; my email address is --- Message edited by CancerCompass staff: for personal protection, email address removed. My husband has been taking sorafenib for almost 3 weeks and is having problems walking due to foot pain. At this time, we do not know if it is helping control the kidney cancer. Other than the foot pain, he has not suffered any other side effects.

Did your foot pain come back after you were off of the med for awhile? My husband has been on sorafenib for 10 days and is unable to walk due to the foot pain. But we don't want to discontinue the med because we are hoping it will improve his health if he can just stick it out. I would like to know how you are doing now.

Does anyone know the success rate of patients with Sorafanib? My father at the age of 40 had a nephrectomy and also has metastatic lesions on his lungs. His oncologist didn't give him much hope with interluekin and my father opted not to make what time he had worse with chemo illness. But now he has told us of this new treatment. I would also like to know more about the side effects/ adverse reactions.

Thanks

Wendi D,

My wife started Sorafanib in November 2005. Sorafanib is now called Nexavar
and was approved 12/20/2005 by the FDA.
On January 8, 2005 she had a cat scan. The
cancer has shrunk 30%.
Her hair is continuing to fall out and she has
a rash that itches. She has fatigue but now has
a VERY positive attitude.
There are 10 people in her "group". 6 have results similar to hers. 3 are holding their own. 1 is not doing well. All of these patients were part of a study on Sorafanib dating back to
February 2005. All were considered terminal.
Some patients have the hand-foot syndrome and
have difficulty walking but most are doing
well.

Hi Ronald, I've been on Sorafenib for 10 days and developed bright red rash all over my body, high blood pressure. I am stragling with fatique and inability to walk due to bad pain in my feet. SInce your wife was on this drug for so long now, maybe you know how long before these side effects go away if ever? I can't sleep or eat (I also have sores in my mouth) and itchiness is driving me crazy. Still, my greatest concern is ability to walk since school started and I need to have enough in me to keep up with my 4 kids and their busy schedules. Thank you. My best wishes to you wife and you.
