After a colposcopy, I was diagnosed with carcinoma in situ (four weeks ago) and am now scheduled for a LEEP procedure on Nov. 1st. Now that the initial shock has worn off, I have so many questions which I did not have the opportunity to ask my obgyn and would love any input. The colpsocopy was not painful, but one month prior to this, I had an endometrial biopsy that was absolutely excrutiating...will the LEEP procedure be comparable to this in regards to pain? And afterwards? Every biopsy I've had over the past couple of months have left me exhausted and sore for a couple of days. I usually handle pain very well, so this has me worried.
Also, through these past couple of months of testing, I have been told each time that everything looked "fine" until the lab results would come back with different opinions. I have read several reports that state the LEEP procedure will eliminate the cancerous cells but then others have stated that this procedure can determine if the cancer is more severe. This is extremely confusing to me!!

Hi Candice, I have gone through a similar experience as yourself. And I had the same feeling of confusion as my specialist did not want to give me any details. I did a lot of research on my own to find out what those terms meant, etc...

I understand that the LEEP procedure does remove the cancerous cells, but and it could also let them know if the cells had spread any further, from what my doctor had told me.

My experience with the LEEP was that it was quite painful. I was not aware of what was going to happen as they called me in to discuss the results of the biopsy and wanted to do the LEEP that very moment, so it was a shock to me.
I would ask for a sedative if you are worried about it. They did attempt to 'freeze' the area but it did not do much for me.

The great news, and what I am very thankful for is that they found these cells and are getting rid of them.

I wish you all of the best, Alli
Subject: Going Through The Same Thing...
Date: 10/28/2005
Hi! I also am going through the same experience as you. I started with the colposcopy, punch biopsy, and ECC. The results that came back from that were very superficial (straight out of the Dr's mouth) - severe dysplasia/CIN III. My Dr. scheduled me for a LEEP procedure, which I had on Oct. 20th. The procedure took about 30 minutes to do. It was uncomfortable, but not too painful. Afterwards, I was very shaky and dizzy. The following days have been somewhat uncomfortable and painful, like severe menstrual cramping. What I was not prepared for was the results from the LEEP procedure. I was lead to believe that having a LEEP procedure would take care of things and I was going to be done. I wasn't expecting what came next. My results have come back as invasive cancer. My OBGYN can't tell me what stage I am in due to the LEEP procedure I just had. He told me I had to wait 3 months to heal and then he would look further. I was hurt and confused by his laid back approach to this. I have made an appt with a gynocologic oncologist, which will be Monday, Oct. 31st. The nurse at the cancer center said that waiting 3 months is unacceptable. I don't have much experience or advice yet, since I am new at this too. But please, please make sure you get your Dr. to tell you exactly what's going on and what to expect, and if you are at all uncomfortable - get a second opinion. God Bless you in you journey. I will be praying for you and all.

Candice,
I been recently diagnosed with severe dysplasia/CIN III. I had the LEEP performed a week ago. My biopsy results came back that I still have severe dysplasia.
What was your experience? Did you get any more info from the dr?
Thanks for all the help!

Meshell, Did you get any news from the gynocologic oncologist? I have had a similar experience and felt that my gyno has blown me off. I got results last week from the LEEP stating that I still have severe dysplasia. This is all really new to me and I'm trying to find as much info as possible. I hope everything worked out with your situation. God bless.

Hi Sara, I am so sorry for the delay in this response. I hope this reaches you. I am so sorry to hear that you are also dealing with this scary disease. First, I will tell you that making an appt with the gynocologic oncologist was the best thing I have ever done! The Dr. at the cancer center was much more experienced and equiped to handle my case. I am happy to say that with surgery my oncologist was able to remove the cancer, and he was very conservitive in the entire process because I am so young and want to have children. My husband and I are very hopeful. I can understand completely where you are coming from. Please, please either get a second opinion or make an appt with an oncologist. My regular OBGYN (which I think is a wonderful man) was going to make me wait until Jan to procede, and due to his ignorance about cervical cancer I had to go through more surgeries and heartbreak than necessary. He was unwilling to admit he didn't know how to proceed and was going to continue with the wrong treatment. God bless you and your family during this. I hope I was able to help in some small way.

I just had a LEEP procedure three weeks ago and still have severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ according to report. My doctor recommended a cone biospy or hysterectomy and asked me a week after back to clinical with decision. I don't know at all.
