Leaking Colostomy bag

A couple of weeks ago my grandfather was hospitalized when he began to vomit uncontrollably and lose control of his bowel movements. When he got to the emergency room, they assessed his condition. They weren't expecting him to live. He is an 81 year old man, in septic shock.

His blood pressure had dropped so much and he was so dehydrated that they were pumping fluids into his body as quick as they could.

Long story short, he was so bloated from all those fluids, that the colostomy went well, but the quality of the surgery was bad.

Right now my grandpa is in a rehab center to get his strength back up. Unfortunately,  my grandpa's bag is leaking and the feces is essentially eating away at his skin because the colostomy wasn't done properly.

Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to help my grandpa get past all this irriatation, so he can get better and come home?

Thank you,

Amanda

Sorry to hear that your Grandfather is having this irritation in addition to his recovery.   Please speak to the nursing staff at the rehab.  There are products to prrevent and treat this type of problem such as Karaya Paste, Wafers and Rings...and also properly fitting colostomy products. Hollister is the main supplier of ostomy products...you might try to google them or some sites for colostomy care.  Good Luck and God Bless!

My husband had a issue with his bag leaking out and we had to change to a convex bag to basically push his stoma away from the stomach.  that has worked for us along with plaing barrier rings, cut up in any "groves" around his stoma.  Stoma powder is also something you might want to have the nursing staff us.  It maybe that his stoma has changed in size and when the bag is cut out the opening is too large.  It should only be large enough for the stoma to be inserted; this cuts down on the skin exposure to reduce irritation.  Good luck!
