Essential Thrombocythemia

My daughter-in-law, 26, has had pneumonia.  Blood work showed high white cell count and platelets at 2700.  Admitted to hospital and had bone marrow aspiration.  Did not show any cancer, but platelets still extremely high.  Dr put her on hydroxyurea today, come back in 1 wk for more blood work.  Could this be ET?  Does anyone know about the type of thrombocythemia that is caused from infection?
