HGSIL w gland involvement - taking control!

hi everyone,

i am new to this board, and would like to share my story. i was recently diagnosed with high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion with gland involvement after colposcopy at the age of 31. i have had LGSIL in the past (4 years ago), and resolved on its own, and gone back to normal paps. however, recently, i had the high grade diagnosis, and was referred to gyn oncologist.

there are really two categories of dysplasia, notably "low grade" (CIN 1) or "high grade" (CIN 2 and CIN 3). the gold standard for treatment with women with high grade is to proceed with a LEEP/cone biopsy, as recommended by oncologist, to remove the dysplastic cells. he is concern that the dysplasia could progress to cervical cancer. even with the LEEP/cone biopsy, there is 15% chance that the dysplasia can come back. it is to my understanding that the dysplasia resolves from a healthy immune system. my plan of action is to stop taking birth control pills (evidence that birth control pills can cause dysplasia), and load up on vitamins (new chapter organics every women, new chapter CoQ10 + food complex, DIM supplement, beta carotene 25,000 IU, folic acid) and daily green drink. other women on this board have attempted this and have had good results (mostly CIN 2 dx). i will try this for 3 months, and follow up with my gyn/onc for re-colpo and pap. i'm hoping i can fight this without LEEP/cone.

i wanted to share this for women out there who have similar diagnoses but do not know that there are alternatives to LEEP. this regimen isn't recommended by the medical community, but i like to take my own health into action. if the high grade dysplasia does not clear in 3 months, i will still have the LEEP/cone option. but if i can fight this, i rather avoid the LEEP/cone. i hope to have children one day! and the 8% chance of complications of being able to carry full-term/infertility is too great for me.

i will keep you posted with my results!

I wish you the best of luck with the vitamin regime... I had a 6 month period between starting the vitamins and my first clear pap. (and I smoke a big no no for cervical cancer according to my doc)..I kept up with the vitamins and I got my second normal pap after 2 years of bad pap/ bad colp.. bad pap/ bad colp.. you know the cycle..

I am not sure what is in the women's multi vitamin you are taking but make sure that it has a B complex in it.. a lot of the reading I did said to include a B complex..

I hope you get the same wonderful results I got

Hello, I had concidered not having the cone biopsy done because my results from the colposcopy said I had adenocarcinoma in situ which is not cancer but is the precurser. I ended up having the cone biopsy done on December 30th and on 1/07/09 found out I have cervical cancer. My tumor is still small but it has already started spreading to tissues and lymph nodes, so I would consider getting it done. Good luck to you and your choice.

Even with the LEEP/cone biopsy, there is 15% chance that the dysplasia can come back.

If the doctor has told you that, then it points out even more how much we need the therapeutic medication in clinical trials available sooner rather than later.

As an afterthought, have you looked at the lab reports, at all? In addition, after reading medical guides, if you have dysplasia in the endocervical canal, the doctor is supposed to a cold knife cone biopsy, not a LEEP/cone. It's more accurate so that the doctor can better diagnose and hopefully treat you. If your dysplasia doesn't regress, after three months, please consider a different doctor.

When there is dysplasia in the endocervical glands, it's more serious. But I respect the choice you have made for yourself, particularly since your are going to be rechecked in three months. My only real advice is that you work with a credentialed professional to tailor the regimen to your body's needs. If you check the cervical dysplasia group on Yahoo, the forum moderator worked with a naturopath after reading Dr. Tori Hudson's book. After my horribly botched LEEP, I decided "never again", so I work with an accupuncturist who tailors my "menu." I was referred to him because he works in a clinic under the umbrella of the teaching hospital in my city. There are also holistic doctors you can find, who are licensed to practice both eastern and western medicine.

yes, i have been dissecting my reports to pieces in fact. i couldn't really find any true data on the significance of HGSIL with or without gland involvement. one med literature quoted that there was a higher chance that gland involvement means that it is more likely to HGSIL rather than LGSIL. i asked my oncologist about this specifically... and he said gland involvement really is sort of insignificant. at an earlier age, we will have more glands on the cervix, and as we age, the glands will migrate to the endocervical canal. because of my age of 31 (which he still considers young), there will be glands on the cervix... and its involvement is really a moot point. the ECC was benign with my gyn. my oncologist repeated the ECC, which i should get the results soon. if there is involvement of the ECC, my diagnosis would be very different, and i would go with the cone at that point. the oncologist was very very thorough and answered all my questions. we talked for about 1.5 hours, and he examined me in between my questioning. he doesn't believe it's anything at this point but high grade. he will however obtain my slides from the colpo and take a look himself. i feel good about my decision of taking vitamins and eating healthier. i just hope that there are more women out there who understands the significance of their report and seek other alternatives.

thanks chemiszt24,

you are certainly an inspiration to follow! i was originally taking a B complex, but since the new essentials every woman daily has more or less the same component with the B complex, i decided to eliminate the B complex. they're gigantic pills, and swallowing one less will make me happier! :)

thanks for the well wishes.

I had the same diagnosis today and they recommed a cold knife conification...near as I can tell this is not cervical cancer but a pre-cursor to it. I'm going in for surgery asap to get it over with and not chance it getting worse....

hi everyone,

this is follow-up message to the one i originally posted. on 5/8, i went to gyn/oncologist for the 3 months follow-up and repeat biopsies/ECC after following the aforementioned multivitamen regimen.  the 5 biopsies came back as benign/normal. however, the ECC now indicates mild dysplasia. i am a little confused with the results. i have not spoken to the oncologist yet, but will share my news here once that is done.

my original diagnosis was HGSIL w gland involvement. previous ECCs all indicate benign/normal. i will likely have the ECC repeated.
