treatment options stage 0, vaginal cancer (VAIN)

I was dx in November('08) with VAIN or stage 0 vaginal cancer. I am currently doing the 5FU or Effudex cream course of treatment. I do 7 days on, 3 weeks off and then go in to my oncologist for a pap and colposcopy. I will need to get 3 paps in a row clear. i've been told this could take anywhere from 6 to 18 months. It's not a very pleasant cream. I have ended up with 3rd degrees burns and blisters, but am hopefully avoiding future burns by applying a layer of Desitin (diaper rash ointment) to the outside in case any cream should spill over. Now, my question if anyone should have info is as follows. I have been told I am not a laser surgical candidate because I have multifocal (4 to be exact) abnormal areas. I am wondering, however, has anyone had a vaginectomy. I am only 34, so i know this is a last resort, however, I am one who likes to be prepared. the more info, the better, I figure. So, if anyone has had this, what does this consist of and did you follow it with reconstruction. The whole thought of that type of surgery makes me quesy, embarrased, and scared, but I really need to know. Anxious to hear - cupfull of hope

I'm sorry you are going through this. I was diagnosed with vaginal cancer Dec. 07, I had to have chemo and rads. I now have recurrent vaginal cancer in the same area, mostly rad damage with minute traces of cancer cells I was told. So I am having the Cyberknife proceedure to avoid a very morbid surgery.

I'm glad they found this when it was still VAIN. I know that tx is horrible. As far as vaginal reconstruction, they would remove the vagina, and in most instances perform the reconstruction at the same time. If you are faced with such a surgery, I would request reconstruction be done at the same time. I've spoken with quite a few women who have had a vaginectomy with reconstruction and they are doing just fine. Of course you will need to have lubrication for intimacy, but I'm sure you will still need that after using the tx you are using now. I was told recovery wasn't too difficult with this proceedure.
