Abdominal swelling after Sutent

Hello All:

Has anyone experienced abdominal swelling after a cycle of Sutent? I have and it seems to be a mystery for the docs. Unsure if coming from tumor necrosis or erosion into a blood vessle by the cancer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My husband had the same exact side effect from Sutent.  The fist 3 cycles were fine but after his next 4 cycles, he also had abdominal swelling during his two weeks breaks.  We kept on asking the oncologist but he didn't know what caused this.  All he said was that this is not a good sign.  After his seventh cycle, Steve had a c t Scan and it showed that all mets were stable.  His onc decided to try Toricel because he wanted to see shrikedge to the mets not just stablizing the mets. His onc said that we could always go back to Sutent.later.  This Thursday will be Steve's tenth cycle of Toricel.  Next week Steve will have a C T Scan to see how his mets are doing.  Steve has RCC Stage 4 with mets to left lung, liver spleen, two large masses on his left side in his abdominal area  and    in 2 ribs.  Since he is imoperable.  Steve 's left kidney (source of Kidney Cancer)  was embolized.  Glad to know that your doctor said that it might come from tumor neucrosis or erosion into a blood vessel by the cancer.  I would like to know more about this because Steve might have to go back on Sutent one day.   If anyone knows some info, please share.  God Bless!

Thank you for responding to my post. Well, its kind of a downer that your husband's Oncologist didn't think it was a good thing to have abdominal swelling afer the Sutent cycle. Mine is unsure. It could be a bad thing (tumor erosion into a blood vessle) or a good thing (necrosis of the tumor). I have only had one cycle and I have gotten a CT scan after it which showed stability with some slight increase in size in some areas. He has decided to have me go another round of Sutent. I hope I am not waisting my time. Did your husband's Oncologist give you an idea of how many cycles of Sutent would show a response?

Krys,

My husband's onc didn't really say how many cycles of Sutent should be given before a ct scan is done to see if Sutent worked or not.  Good Luck.  I will update you on Steve's progress.  Let Steve and I know how you are doing?  God Bless!
