Hi I have been on Tamoxefin for 3yrs and 7 months for breast cancer. I went to see my  oncologist yesterday and told him I got my period for one day 9 days ago. He told me to stop taking my tamoxefin, and ordered an ultrasound for the pelvic and a transvaginal ultrasound also. He's chequing for uterine or vaginal cancer that apparently is one of the side affect when taking Tamoxafen.. Has anybody had to go through this out there, and what was your prognosis. By the way I'm 58 years old so I should'nt be having my periods. Any feedback good or bad would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I suggest you be very assertive about getting checked for uterine cancer.  Post menopausal bleeding is the main symptom of uterine cancer, but If they catch it early it is very treatable, i.e. curable. I was not diagnosed early because I was pre-menopausal, age 45, and my symptoms were irregular  and heavier than normal (for me) periods, and an unusual discharge, which were dismissed by various doctors and NP's. I'd had a normal Pap smear 2 months prior. I was eventually diagnosed with Stage II uterine cancer because I went to the ob/gyn on call at Kaiser that day and he did a biopsy to be on the safe side.  During the same time period, a co-worker was diagnosed very early during a pre-natal check-up.  She had an out-patient and went on to have a beautiful healthy baby.  The lesson to me, be more assertive about my health care.  I hope you had follow-up check-ups to rule out cancer.  What happened?  I'll be thinking of you.

Dear Kathy-sf thank you for your input on this matter. I took a pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound which came back normal. My oncologist told me to go back on my tamoxefen pills (pills against reaccurance of breast cancer) I have 16 more months left on those pills, hope I dont need to go for these test again.  Don't know if you are finished with your treament, I  hope you are  and everything went well for you. There is a great number of us "living' with cancer thanks to early detection. Take care and god bless.

Judging by the date of your posting you may well have your answer to your diagnosis.  I had had no other cancer when I discovered my uterine cancer.  My first sign of a problem was for several months prior to spotting, which immediately signaled me to go to the doctor, I had about 4 months of unexplained vaginal odor.  Pap smear revealed no problems and finally had to have a uterine exam to get my diagnosis of uterine cancer.  My choice of treatment was alternative.

Hope all has worked out for you.

I too am encouraging you to be assertive about folowing up on what could be early stage uterine cancer.  I am concerned that your ultrasound may not be completely diagnostic at this early stage.

I have stage 3 uterine cancer along with stage 1 ovarian on both sides.  My ultrasound only diagnosed the ovarian cancer by way of seeing a complex mass on one ovary.  There was no mention of the uterine cancer or a cancerous second ovary by the ultrasound technician.  Apparently she didn't see the uterine cancer so imagine my surprise when my pathology report came back so skewed toward advanced uterine cancer that had invaded 75% of the myometrial wall.

I am pre-menopausal so my symptoms were heavy bleeding at age 42 which I failed to think could be anything but pre-menopause.

I strongly urge you to find someone to do a uterine biopsy.  You should NOT be bleeding at all post-menopausally.
