Throat cancer is one of those "survivorable " cancers, but at the very least it will change your day to day living.  Stay on your kids about the consequences...talk with them.  I'm only 55 but we had our kids early.  When I was diagnosed and then was told of the upcoming surgery, all three of my adult children smoked, but quit.  Now that the dust has settled, one went back to smoking, one did but has quit again, and the third one is pregnant, but admits that she "misses" smoking. Even as bad and final that the "full laryngectomy" is, its a great example of the strong addiction of nicotine and the overwhelming control it has on some, not all, but some.  So with that being said, don't assume your kids won't smoke just because you had throat cancer....talk to them and make sure you keep the human element, the personal human element attached to the act itself and your health issues.  It should be our primary role as parents.  My kids may have very well smoked whether I did or not....but I'll never know that, because I did smoke.....man.....

your original message really hit home with me> I am just 40 years old and been treated for neck cancer from 26 years of smoking. Just last month my sister just 42 years old lost her battle to breast cancer, she never even thought about smoking, no family history of cancer. Like you said she was just living. I should be gone not her! My only comfort is knowing that my daughters will never smoke after watching what i endured.

There are a lot of people who want to boo hoo and criticize or beat up the tobacco companies.  A lot of you need some education. I am no more intelligent than the rest of you.  I too have no larynx, no tongue and a few other missing parts. I get to spend the rest of my life feeding myself with a syringe.

We all have something in common called ignorance! The tobacco companies did exactly the same thing you are subjected to everyday.  Advertise in a manner that preys upon the ignorance of the general public.  Politicians thrive on it.  The Federal Government and Corporate America depend upon your ignorance. They simply accept the fact that most Americans are gullible enough believe anything heard on TV or Radio. Most are 95% convinced  none of you will do any research. You are all ready to jump on the ole bandwagon and go along with any claim that gets media attention.

Are You Sure Smoking and Drinking are Responsible for Your Cancer?

In 1996 I opened a Kiln used to fire Ceramics. The first breath I took as the lid opened  burned  my throat so bad I had to drop the lid and run. My voice box was never the same again. None of the Doctors I had would even consider the possibility that it had anything to do with cancer.  They are unwilling to accept any possibility other than cigarettes.

Do a little research on what your Government claims are acceptable levels of chemicals put into most drinking water. Chemicals they claim cause cancer.  That information could lead to a coronary and spare you that horrible cancer death you know will come sooner or later.

Oral Sex Cause of Throat Cancer Rise

July 29, 2009               WebMD Health News

Changing Face of Throat Cancer

Smoking and alcohol abuse were once considered the only major risk factors for these  cancers, but this is no longer the case.

American Cancer Society Chief Medical Officer Otis Brawley, MD, said as many as half of the oropharyngeal cancers diagnosed today appear to be caused by HPV infection.

“Changing sexual practices over the last 20 years, especially as they relate to oral sex, are increasing the rate of head and neck cancers and may be increasing the rates of other cancers as well,” he said.

Your Doctor and media hype blame cigarettes for your cancer and you want to sue the tobacco company. So! Who does these latest cancer victims get to sue?  Surely they are entitled to a scapegoat just as much as you are.
