piroxicam for canine

I was reading through an older message and someone was talking about piroxicam for canines.

I have an older rough coat collie, and lovely he is. He has a tumor on his kidney and it's now bleeding into the bladder. The vet said he's okay for now because his blood count isn't at a dangerous low.  He appears weak, but he's happy. He's eating, drinking and enjoying his little walks. However when he goes  pee he has to strain. I can tell it's frustrating him, he keeps trying and trying untill he gives up and comes in.

I want him to have quality of life and as long as he's wanting to be here I want to do what I can to make it comfortable.

I heard that piroxicam can help releave this straining condition.

If anyone has any info to share, please do. My lovely old boy will love you for it.

Thank you, Barb

My cocker spaniel is a 1 year bladder cancer survivor. Although piroxicam is asupposed to help the symptoms that you are noticing, we had better success with a holistic remedy called Bladder Strength by Vetriscience. I'm not sure that it will slow the cancer like piroxicam, but it relieved the peeing problems better and you can use both. My Rachael had great difficulty peeing even after surgery removed the tumors. The Bladder Strength fixed her up though. No straining - no incontinence. Its good stuff. Btw we had to use twice the recommended amt to get good results, which our holistic vet said was ok.

Has the Piroxicam worked for your pup? Mine is newly diagnosed (2 days ago). The vet wants to do the antibiotic orbax again (what we used for the recurring "UTI" (i.e. cancer) which worked great) before considering Piroxicam. But she is going in small amounts. Is it because the bladder just doesn't hold enough, or is the ureters blocked? Did it help your pup go better? Thanks in advance, from me and my little beagle.

Hello,

Regarding the treatment of my Collie.

We decided not to put him through traditional methods of cancer treatment. We fed him well, gave him his daily walk and lots of love.

His straining to urinate cleared up when his tumor stopped leaking into his bladder. It was the blood clotting that caused the straining, it gave him the urge to uninate. After awhile he eather passed the clot or it reasorbed back into his tissure. The body is designed to do this, it's amazing how it will try to heal it's self. The only meds  we gave him was an iron supplement.

Many of the cancer treatments are experimental and very costly. Our dog lived just as long as if he had surgery or chemotherapy without any major treatments. It's the love and positive care for your animals that will keep their desire to stick around. Laddie lived longer than they andicipated even though he was a very sick boy...but he was happy. He passed away from his cancer at eleven years going on twelve.

In your case though, I do beleive piroxicam would work, for ours he was too far advanced with his illness.

Just keep loving your dog, be positive and feed her a healthy diet.

My blessings to you and your lovely dog.

Barbara

My sweet loving 12 yrs old, American Staff. terrier has been diagnosed as a bladder cancer back in April. 09.  She has been on Piroxicam since April for a few months. I just re-visited my vet for ultra sound to see if her tumor has been bigger or shirken. Luckily, tumor seems to be the same size since last April. & my Dr. decided to put her on Piroxicam again.

Although we are pretty satisfied with our Dr. however, we want to get a second opinion with another Dr. here in Los Angeles & made an appt. for this Sat. I would like to meet a Dr. who has much much more experiences with older dogs in bladder cancer & advise me with useful ideas as much as possible. My current Dr. does not put any extra effort to go out of his way to give me any useful advise for my dog.

Thundra's Diet- I have told that high protein diet is the key for dogs in cancer however my dog has been eating "Innova" senior brand which made with mainly good quality meat-seriously, chicken is first ingredient along with so many other meats and than apple, carrots, flex seed etc..etc....we are absolutely happy with this brand. Additional though, i mixed with cottage cheese, a few drops of liquid Vitamin E, flax seed oil, raw eggs, ,more apples, carrots, sometime broccoli with her daily Innova dry food-twice a day. Also turkey breast with her medicine. I recently purchase fish oil gel capsules and decided to give her once/day to just try it out.

My loving Thundra is fortunately doing absolutely great so far, no signs that she is in pain not so ever however her blood in urine freaks me out more than anything. She goes on regular 30-40 mins walks everyday, sleep well through out the night, long hikes occasionally.

I'm trying to be positive & keep on researching the best Vet for my dog in town to see which Dr. seems to be more knowledgeable. I want my Dr. to make ultra effort & try to educated me as much as possible.

If i feel that i'm doing everything right, i feel that my method is working for my dog, i think i should stick with it. You know your dog more than any other person in the whole world.

I want to hear from all of you & please let me know if you want to share more stories that i should be aware of.

Best wishes for all of you...

and Please Please be positive since your dog can sense the sadness from you. No doubt, no negativity!!

Believe in yourself.
