I never put the 2 together

I am a 7 year survivor of stage 1 breast cancer. I took tamox for 5 years and since then have been on aromasin. I have been complaining about terrible pains in my hands. I thought it was arthritis and never connected the debilitating pain to the medication until a friend on the same medication told me her doctor said the pain was connected to the Aromasin. I decided to google aromisin side effects and was amazed at what I found. I immediately left a message for my oncologist. I hope i can stop the Rx now and the pain will finally stop!!! Thank goodness for sites like this one.

Hi,

I had Arimidex followed by Aromasin for a total of 21/2yrs. The wk I went on Arimidex I started radiation, so when my arms began having shooting pins and needles, like electricity running from the hands up I questioned it but both oncol and radiol drs said it couldn't be either of their therapies. Long story short, hands got worse and I had carpel tunnel surgery on the right hand.  Switching to Aromosin i thought there was slight improvement but eventually (6M0s later) realized it was worsening again. Oncol Doc switched me to Tamoxefin and I have almost recovered. The hand that had surgery is still painful in the AM but only upon wakening.  I would be careful about taking an aromatase inhibitor. My Doc will never give it to me again.  Wishing you luck,

 Carole

I think I would be a little careful about choosing sides.  Aromasin is about the best most comprehensive medications there is anticancer  long term.  I for one  would rather get on my knees and thank God there is medication so I do not have cancer and bear a little discomfort.   Women become resistent to Tamoxifen and indeed begin being estrogen positive on it, read the literature.....not so on Aromasin.  Do your research for yourself IN DEPTH.......The effects from Aromasin are permanent, not so for Tamoxifin.

Good luck.

I am sorry if the implication was choosing sides. What I wanted to say was pay attention to your body and symptoms.  I suffered a lot more than "discomfort" for almost three years.  I know we are all different and that some meds have better results than others, but we may need to advocate for ourselves at times.

If I could GET on my knees without moaning and groaning and asking for help to get up I WOULD thank God for the drug. I understand what you are saying but for some of us the struggle to deal with the pain e v e r y  single day sometimes gets overwhelming.

Looking backing my comment of 2/10/2009 really had two variables and that was unfortunate- you began radiation & aromatase inhibitor at same time.  For what it it worth I want to mention my experience- you know people always like to shift the BLAME.....I was on NO MEDICATION. I began radiation and on the 3rd radiation treatment my arm swelled like a huge baseball bat, dead as a doorbell, I could not even lift it, it was normal before the treatment.  The radiation drs said to me it dit not come from the radiation- of course it did --- I have had horrible problems with lymphedema since that day with swelling up to my clavicle.  Of course it came from the radiation.   They said radiation does not cause a problem so soon,  well it did with me, I am very sensitive; also a very very allergic person- it did cause a problem with me on the 3rd treatment and I wound up having up lymphedema treatments to the arm.  I am throwing this out there.
