Hair growth after radiation

I'm about 2 months out of chemo and radiation.  Unfortunately, I'm also going to have to go to salvage surgery, because there is a still a sizable mass in my neck.  Might be dead tissue, but the surgeon is insisting on a modified neck dissection.  Says that removing the lump and testing it before removing tissue (about 6 days to get results) could seed the area, and it is too risky since I can't take any more radiation.

But, the real question is - have you seen hair growth come back after radiation, and how long did it take?

My beard is coming back - not uniformally and not as rapid growth as before, but definately coming in.

However, I'm not seeing much of anything on the nape of my neck.  You all know what that's like - bald from the middle of the ear down.

I was told by the doctors before treatment that it would come back, but spoke to another patient who said 4 years later he still doesn't have any back.

What is your experience?

thanks

John

2 Months isn't much time. The radiation is still cooking. It's been 2 1/2 years since radiation and I have no need to shave under my chin. Be patient. Tom

My husband finished radiation in May and his hair really started to come back around Thanksgiving. It looks pretty much normal now - but it did come back darker and courser all around. Good luck to you.

My hair on the back of my neck has just started to come back.  It is very thin and fine.  It hasn't come back enough for me to wear my hair up when I go out though!  My rads and chemo treatments were over 12/26/08.  I am about to have the neck dissection also, my will be bilateral.

I'm 16 months out of Tx , chemo and rad.

Mustache and chin came back fairly quickly, as did the hair on the back of my head, within say 3 -4 months. Very sparse on the sides, I shave maybe every 3rd day now as it grows much slower. And my wife decided she liked me better without the mustache anyway.

Best wishes,

Mike

Thanks to everyone for the responses and encouragement.

I guess it is true, that it varies by person.  And, it varies by area for each person.

It appears I have some growth coming back from the chemotherapy.  I lost about 1/2 my hair, so it looked quite thin.  As a result, it is also difficult to see it coming back. But, it just seems to look thicker than it did.

The tongue tissue biopsy came back negative today, so really good news.  Scheduled for the neck dissection on 2/25.
