Subject: my Dad Has Cancer
Date: 11/01/2005
My dad called last night, telling me that his bladder is full of cancer and on Nov 8, he has to go into the hospital to take out his bladder, so he will have to use a bag for that part of his body.
DH is a first aid attendant at work, so he said that Dad will be fine, I am really scared though that this maybe the last time I see my dad.

I had bladder cancer a couple of years ago. My baldder was removed but I was lucky and instead of a bag the doctors reconstructed a bladder inside my body. Sometimes they can and sometimes they can not. Your dad should check with his doctor. I had my surgery done at USC in California. I live in Texas
Your dad should be OK. It has been 2 years for me and I thank G_D every day. They have made tremendous headway in detection and treatment.
I also have a friend in his late 60's who had his bladder removed a few months ago and has a bag. He lives a very happy life and does everyhting swims, hikes etc.
I don't think i can provide my personal data in the forum but I am willing to talk to your dad by email or phone if it helps him. I had a lot of people helping me and it was great to have someone to talk to that had gone through what I was going to go through.
He is going to need support, patience and pushing.

He can email me at --- Message edited by CancerCompass staff: for personal protection, email address removed. Please review CancerCompass Member Guidelines at http://www.cancercompass.com/common/guidelines.html ---.
After my surgery i also was very depressed, he will get better. It is good news that he had a neobladder. To me it is much better than the bag. He is going to have to learn to urinate and it will be a little frustrating at first but after a while he will be able to do it right and have great control especially during day time hours. It's a little harder when you are asleep.
Have him email me. I would love to pass on to him my experiences and to let him know that THERE IS LIGHT and that his quality of life will not be affected almost at all.
I imagine he is still with the foley. It takes about 3 weeks from the day of the surgery for them to take it out.
Good luck. Have him email me
