Help-has anyone has gastritis while on chemo drugs

Hi. I have Stage IV breast cancer in my lungs and bones. First took xeloda, which I only made it through two cycles but vomited constantly. Then was switched to abraxene and avastin chemo drugs. The problem is I had to go off them for three weeks as my stomach and intestines are in really bad shape. Because of the burning and pain in my stomach and I can't eat anything, I think I have gastritis. I am scared if this doesn't get cleared up before I go back on the chemo drugs, I will have holes in my stomach. Has anyone had experience with gastritis while on chemo and if so, what were you able to do to heal the stomach and keep on the chemo at the same time? Help as I need the chemo-but have the stomach problem. Thanks.

I would stress to your oncologist that you are having such severe stomach problems, and tell him you won't do any more chemo until you get some relief.  Also, insist that the doc check for metastasis to the stomach/digestive tract if he/she hasn't already done so. Ask for a referral to an internal medicine specialist if the oncologist can't help you.  Best to get a 2nd opinion - find out what's really going on.

Sincerely,

Tre

Hi I am carol and I had severe gastritis when I was taking adrianmycin/cytoxin . I was given prilosec and maylox and after about a week or so I was feeling better. I cried cause I told my husband that if this was how my chemo was going to be I wouldn't be able to do it. But things got better. Good luck to you . Today I am on my 19th week of chemo and am still taking my prilosec.  ..................Carol
