Persistant Mild Dysplasia

I'm a 41 yr-old woman who has had mild dysplasia off/on since I was first diagnosed at the age of 23. Since that time I have been frozen, LEEPed and dozens of colposcopy procedures more than times than I can count. It is not uncommon for me to need to revisit the doctor on a bi-annual basis for a year or so, then be back to a normal annual check-up.

I have recently changed practitioners, and this is the first time I had someone strongly recommend that I seek a consultation regarding ablation or hysterectomy. I understand that mild displasia typically goes away on it’s own after a few months, mine is persistent. Again, it’s mild. I’m curious if anyone has seen anything on the risks of cancer associated with persistent mild dysplasia.

I understand unattended mild dysplasia is potentially cancerous, but I’m under good care. Is a surgery really required? What other options are there?  I am taking vitamins and eat fairly well…

Thanks much.

I am so sorry you have been addressing this for so many years. Have you been tested to see which HPV strain you have? There is a test by Roche, now, called AMPLICOR. It will let you know which strain(s) you have so that you will know what you have been coping with, all these years.

Have you also been looking at the lab reports, all along? If not, please do. Check to see what you have had, all these years, where it was located, after each biopsy, how extensive it really has been, if it's in the endocervical canal, and if it's in the endocervical glands. That will definitely help you decide which course of action to take.

Something I have learned, since my own case was horribly mishandled, is that knowledge is power. Since it educates us, it gets us actively involved in what is best and makes our doctors work in partnership with us rather than just doing something to our bodies.

I genuinely hope you are finally able to find a good way to resolve what has been a persistent problem for so many years.
