Sarcomitiod RCC m lung (sugested treatment Taxotere?)

My 55 year old Father was diagnosed with Sarcomitiod RCC in May 2008.  He had his right kidney removed. 3 months later they found a mass in his left lung, it was contained, so they removed half of his lung and the mass was also Sarcomitiod RCC.  He just went for his next three month CT scan and it showed a thickening of the lower lining on his right lung.  He will be getting a needle biopsy in a few days to see exactly what it is.  I believe my mother said if it is the sarcomitiod RCC they will be starting him on Taxotere.

Does anyone have experiance with this drug (taxotere)?

Does any one recommend any other treatment for sarcomitiod RCC?

I have been hearing a lot of good things about Sutent, is this recommended for sarcomitiod RCC patiants?

I am looking for hope for my father.  Any one with any help or experience with Sarcomitiod RCC would help a great deal.

My husband was diagnosed in aug 08 w/ rcc that metastized to the lymph nodes and the hummerus bone in his arm and one spot in his r lung . He had his left kidney , lymph nodes and adrienal gland removed , three wks before that he had the cancer removed from his arm [cut the section of bone out and a rod and coupler in to replace it ] some sarcomatoid cells found in yhe kidney . he had a cat 5 wks ago , more mets to the lungs . He has done 3 rounds of sutent . Had another cat the other day and will find out the results on mon . we also don't know if the mets in the lungs developed sometime between the first scan and the start of the sutent. we are saying our prayers that we see some shrinkage we have also heard good things about sutent  and my husband has little side effects [ tired and slight high bp ] . But we have also been told and read sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't and you try the next the best thing to do is read  search all the sights you can and listen . Listen to what the people on this site have to say I have gotten a lot of info and learned what ? to ask also ask for copies of all the reports on the tests and Prayers

It was great to hear from some one else dealing with this type of cancer.  I pray for everyone with this horrible disease everyday.  Please keep me posted on the results on Monday.  I will say many prayers for your husband and pray the the sutent works for him like it has for others.  My fathers spirit was crushed when he found out the news of his CT scan and he may be facing more of this horrible disease.  I pray so hard that the results from his needle biopsy come back that it isnt cancer.  but i want to be prepared if it is. Stay positive

Hi Heather,

My husband was diagnosed with RCC in June 2008.  He had his left kidney removed and a small interstine resection in July.  It had metasticized to the small bowel and lungs.  His was classified as clear cell with 75% sarcomitoid features.  He started sutent in Sept. 2008.  His tumors were reduced in his scan of Nove. 2008.  He recently ahd another scan, but, was off his sutent for more than the 14 day break, and it showed that they had regrown some.  He is back on sutent for two cycles and will be scanned again in May.  We are praying that the sutent continues to do it's job.  Our local oncologist expressed some doubt regarding sutent's effectiveness with his kind of cancer, but the oncologist at a major center that he sees did not.  I am ot familiar with the drug you mentioned.  No one ever suggested that to us.  They have said second line would be torsil, or interluken and avistan, or RAD001 if it is on the market should we need an alternative.  I am going to try to research the drug you mentioned.  Also I recently received ifo on a phase II trial that AVEO phamaceuticals has.  I think it is AV951.

Hope this helps - my prayer go out to you and your family.

I am so happy to hear that you are doing well with your treatment.  This gives me so much hope and I will pass this along to my father, he will be so happy to hear some positive news.  How are the side effects from the sutent? Do they know how long you will need to be on it for?  I am so grateful for your incite and experience. Stay well.

I have RCCSarcomatoid and was treated with Taxotere.  Taxotere is not considered a chemo for the treatment of RCC so you have to make sure that your drug plan will cover it. Medicare does not. The drug kept the lung tumors in check for awhile but did not shrink them . Somtimes Taxotere is used to enable the patient to recover enough stength to be put on a stronger drug.  I was put on once a week chemo using Torisel and only then did I have significant shrinkage of mets to my lungs, brain, and kidney. I was diagnosed in Aug 2007 and given 3 or 4 months life expectancy . Today I am doing well except for fatigue and lack of appetite. Do not give up hope that they will find the right drug I failed Sutent, Gemzar and Taxotere before getting results with Torisel

My mother called the doctor and he said he is putting my father on Torisel not Taxotere. It is so good to hear it is working for you. this gives me hope for my father. Do you know how long you will be on it?  will they start growing again when you get off it?  I just hope everyone hangs in there till there is a real cure for this type of cancer.

Hey,

this is an upade from my post a few weeks ago. we got the results of my fathers needle biopsy and it is
sarcomitoid RCC in his other lung.  he will be starting torisel in two
weeks after a brain scan.

This was the first time I went to
the oncologists office with my father and the doctor pretty much said
my dad had two years to live and that is cancer was going to kill him.
I was shocked that the doctor just came out and said that.  it was the
first time the doctor actually told my dad that there was no hope and
that this drug would only help for a little while. I told my dad that
there is hope.  because the longer he is alive the more chance there is
for people to develope a metod to kill this thing.  I guess i am just
looking for Hope. You all are so strong and all i want to do is let my dad know there is hope.

Torisel is a weekly chemo treatment that prolongs your life. You are on it for as long as it continues to work and then are sometimes switched to another drug . There is more hope today than there was just a few years ago.  Sutent, Torisel and a few other drugs are relatively new so the Drs dont really know how long they will work. 2 years is what most Drs say the life expentancy is with RCC . I was given less than 3 months to live in Aug 2007 and I am still here and   doing much better than the Drs predicted. I am 71 and have children about the same age as your Dad. Maybe your Dads Dr. believes in being brutally honest but it seems to me that he has a defeatist attitude.
