Hello. I have base of tongue cancer and cancer in surrounding lymph nodes of the neck. Perhaps I should place this post in the 'head and neck cancer' section, but I thought it best fit into the nutrition section. The key here is, I have a feeding tube and may soon not be able to swallow enough foods to maintain my weight. I am already very thin. The doctors have recommended ENSURE (a protein drink), but Ensure is loaded with sugars and that seems to violate everything I have studied about fighting cancer. Any help on what to drink and still maintain proper nutrition and weight is appreciated. ... or provide your opinion, is Ensure best for me? I am just afraid I may not be giving myself the best possible chance to succeed at this. Thank you all. Leonard.

Hi I had tongue base cancer in 4/05. I have a feeding tube & always will. I am on 3 cans of 2 cal per day & use oj once & use a lot of water. I lost 55 lbs in the beginning before the feeding tube was put in. I will have my tube 4 years in May. I do wonderful on it & at the weight I should be. I just had my PET scan full body & no cancer. My last radiation was done on 7/22/05 & have been cancer free. God has healed me & I feel good except the mouth pain & gum pain. I have written a few messages on this cancer board. I go to the # 1 ENT in Atlanta & he doesn't believe Ensure is enough. I have also used Resouce, Both of these are great , but you need a RX from your Dr. I wish you the the best of luck. Ask me any question. Unless a person has had oral cancer it's had for them to know about it. I also have the button tube & love it.

Blessing to you

This is based on what I have suggested to another
cancer patient in another forum, after doing a bit
of research on the net.

In preference of cost-effectiveness :

1. Nestle's Peptamen AF (Hydrolyzed collagen, MCTs, fish oil, nutrients)
2. Prosure by Abbott (Hydrolyzed collagen, fish oil, nutrients)
3. Juven by Abbott (HMB, arginine, glutamine)

If you are in the USA, you may apply for aid for Prosure and Juven
thru here. They may give it to you free or discounted, depending
on your elibility.

One of the best liquid supps. that no one has yet made mention of  is acia, it along with mangosteen will provide enough nutrition to keep someone alive. Dr Tim Hollingshead has been doing research on these fruits for many years and has come up with some great ways to use them. Also young coconut water has better nutrition than baby formula. It is a great way to stay hydrated ( osmoality is close to human blood). try to get organic when ever possible. Good luck

I would recommend that you meet with a Registered Dietitian w/ Certification in Oncology Nutrition. There are many well tested products designed to be used in this situation. Let your RD know that you are concerned about sugar and she will be able to explain and find a product that fits your needs. Personally I don't think Ensure is the best product to use and I also think that extreme caution should be used when infusing anything other than a product designed to be infused via PEG due to potential for clogs, food bourne illness, and inadequacy of intake.

Hello Leonard, here is some information on a liquid whole food called Body Balance and below another liquid tincture called Taheebo with anti-cancerous properties. Email me if you would like more information and how to source these. Dr William Saccoman, MD. President of the San Diego Clinic of Preventative Medicine. Worked with Linus Pauling on Vitamin C research. “Body Balance is a whole food product derived from 9 distinct sea vegetables, aloe vera juice, black cherry juice and a touch of honey. It is formulated to activate and maintain the healthy growth of every cell in the body.Body Balance contains over 121 vital nutrients including virtually every vitamin, macro mineral, trace mineral, amino acid and enzyme required for excellent health and well-being. Derived from whole foods, these tiny ionic (electrostatic) nutrients from nature are absorbed the second you take a sip, then assimilated by the body for use at the cellular level. Sea vegetables form the foundational ingredients of Body Balance. Their protein content is excellent, ranging anywhere from 10% to 48%. In terms of amino acid composition, sea vegetable protein is similar to that of egg whites and legumes. However, sea vegetables are low in fat and have more vitamins such as A, B, B2, B12, C Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid and Niacin than fresh fruits and vegetables. The sea vegetables used in Body Balance have a high mineral content that provides outstanding nutritional benefits. As you know, the body requires approximately 400% more minerals than vitamins. With 9 macro and 65 trace minerals all biologically active, the minerals in Body Balance are readily available to meet all of the body’s mineral requirements. Just like an apple or a pear, sea vegetables contain trace amounts of minerals like arsenic, lead, aluminum and mercury. However, you are probably aware of the research showing that organic trace minerals are not deposited in the body like inorganic forms of these same elements. Research shows that organic trace minerals will actually help flush inorganic heavy metals from the body (Todd, Gary M.D., The Institute of Nutritional Science Journal, June 1996). The enzymes found in sea vegetables aid in the binding, extraction and removal of numerous toxic chemicals and residues which have accumulated in our bodies. As you know, enzymes are complex proteins that act like catalysts to activate chemical changes in other substances without being changed themselves. Enzymatic action is a major factor in the biochemical process of growth, metabolism, cellular regeneration, digestion and assimilation. The enzymes in Body Balance enable the various areas of the cells to perform at their maximum cellular metabolic rate, and aid in unlocking and releasing minerals for use at the cellular level. They also aid in the production of hormones necessary for all bodily functions. http://www.teamcrown.net/presentations/ATBBP/ I also recommend the following known as Taheebo. The chemical constituents and active ingredients of Pau D’Arco have been well documented. Its use and reported cures with various types of cancers in the early 1960’s fuelled much of the early research. Its anti-cancerous properties were first attributed to a phytochemical found in the bark called lapachol. In a 1968 study, lapachol demonstrated highly significant activity against cancerous tumours in rats. Then in 1974 the NCI, after finding out that they couldn’t patent the plant and profit from it, reported that Phase I clinical trials failed to produce a therapeutic effect with lapachol “without side effects” and discontinued further cancer research. Another research group developed a lapachol analogue in 1975 which was effective in increasing the life span by over 80% in mice inoculated with leukaemic cells. These findings were published in the prestigious Journal of Medical Chemistry. In a 1980 study of patients with various cancers (liver, kidney, breast, prostate and cervix) pure lapachol demonstrated an ability to shrink tumours and reduce feeling of pain caused by tumours and achieved complete remissions in one third of the patients. The Phytochemical Database housed at the U.S. Department of Agriculture has documented lapachol as being antiabscess, anticarcinomic, antiedemic, anti-inflammatory, anti malarial, antiseptic, anti tumor, anti viral, bactericide, fungicide, insectifuge, pesticide, protisticide, respiradepressant, schistosomicide, termiticide, and viricide. --Message edited by CancerCompass staff.
