I had my robotic surgery Feb 26, 09, the surgery was real easy but the cath wasnt. I had it in for 12 days and when they removed it, I was Really happy and thought that I was on the road to being normal, but I am really having a hard time dealing with this urination problem. I havent slept in my bed since I got home, still in the recliner because I dribble alot.I am doing the workouts with my urniary track muscles and have finally got to where I can hold my urine for awhile, but when i got to go , igo and then the dribbles start. I have used so many pads and taken so many showers to stay clean . My question is , has anyone gone through anything like this and if so about how long did it take to get to some sort of being normal? Just read an artical that caffene, choclate and tea has an effect on recovery, anything to this?  Thanks in advance for any and all come backs on these questions.   BillCJ

patiens,

hi, 2-3 weeks  is very short time to recover from the cuting and subsequent trauma in the pelvic area. i had radical prostatectomy a year ago.A dr. from the old country , said that muscles which are part of the blader are not cut when uretra is cut and stiched. those muscules are closing the valve, they  are traumatised and limp and need time and exersize for 2 to 3 months. Improvement start showing in 2-3 weeks. He was right. After 4 months i got  99% control. Keep in mind muscules are part of the blader and are not cut at the time prostate is removed. In my case, after 2 weeks caterer was removed, leaking was nuisance, but I hit exersise on the floor, Pilate type. within 5-6 days I trew diper and started making Tampon type insert from layers of toilet paprer wraped in gause, so i could shange it every hour. this helped me to stay dry and smell free. Hope this info will help you.

I apologise for missspeling, auto speler does not work trough this site. Best wishes George

Hi,

I had the HDR monotherapy, but experienced the same urinary problem. I used the Depends underwear and the pads for about 6 weeks.  I also learned to not pass by a restroom ...even if you think you don't have to pee right now.

Gradually you will be able to hold in the urine when you get the sudden urge to go.  It was particulary a problem when I had been riding in a car for a bit and then when I got out...had to go right now!  It will improve.  I am only having to go once during the night most of the time.  Dribbling is a bit of a problem so I usually grab a piece of TP while I am peeing and then drain wny urin into  the paper when I am done.  Hope this helps.

Hi Bill,

I'm now at week 9 after robotic surgery and still fairly incontinent but improving.  Sitting or lying down there's no problem but on getting up the flood starts!  Walking around there's no way to stop it but if I can get to a toilet I can sometimes pee the rest into the toilet.  I started on the Depend underwear but am now using the pads.  They work fine but need changing every 2-3 hours depending on what I've been drinking.  Mornings are more difficult than afternoons I have found.  I think I am very gradually improving and the exercises do help.

You're very early days yet so hopefully you will start to see improvement very soon.  I have several relatives and friend who were much improved after 2-3 months.

Regards,

Mike

Bill

I had robotic prostate surgery two weeks ago and the catheter out a week ago.  My faucet is till dripping and I got very little help from the surgeon's office.  I searching for more specific exercises I can do and I came across the book "beyond Kegels" but it was not avialable from the common online bookstores.  I found the authors website and bought a copy directly from them.  She claims by doing her exercises she can shorten Bladder control in half versus standard kegels.  She has been teaching this to women for 25 years but all the exercises work for prostrate surgery men too.  here is the link.

good luck and keep trying.  The information is often conflicting.  John hopkins recommends stop and starting your flow every time you have a good flow while others say don't do that.  Some people suggest reducing you fluids while "beyond kegel" suggests you need to tryand fill your bladder so the bladder stretches and your holding muscles strength. etc etc
