sore gums

The last few chemos that I have been on have caused my gums to recede and become very soft to the touch.  I almost feel like I am losing my teeth, and my throat hurts.  Has anyone experienced this while on chemo.  I am now on Topotecan and after the first cycle my markers went down and except for the gums, I am not having any other extrerme reactions.  My tumor markers go up and down (1034 to 390 to 590 to 466) with each different chemo drug.  I would like to stay on Topotecan as long as it works.  Hope someone can talk to me.  Thanks

HinRosemarie,

Ask your Dr. for the miracle rinse. I have it and it works. Or you can buy Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash, also very good. Take care . Good Luck!!

Love, Terry

 Rose Marie,

My daughter had terrible gum sores throughout the course of her treatment. We used the miracle rinse, it really was a miracle worker. On top of that when my daughter was an inpatient after treatment they provided us with a little bit of morphine to help, if that could even be an option for you. We would also give her warm washcloths she would suck on and just leave in her mouth that soothed her sores. We also used the washcloth because her sores were so bad that when she opened her mouth it involved lots of bleeding and the washcloth would reduce that and the pressure helped stopped the bleeding, but from what she told us it did a fine job of soothing the sores as well.  That may or may not help, being that you are an adult and she was a child. I hope your mouth gets to feeling better and I hope that is of any help to you.

Use the biotene toothpaste and mouth wash.  I can hardly use any other toothpaste anymore.

Thank
you for your note.  The swelling seems to be going down but my
gums are bleeding.  I am going to take your advice and buy some of
the biotene toothpaste.  It may also be the one that my dentist
recommended  when I was starting chemo 2 1/2 years ago. I used it
until my gums began to hurt and thinking it was the
toothpaste...stopped using it.  I will give it another try.
Again thanks for the info.

I understand your dilemma.  My gums are the same way.  I quit going to the dentist for a while, but have started back again.  I quit chemo for about 5 weeks so I could go to the dentist.  I, too, am on topetecan, but I don't care for it too much.  It makes me sick (none of the others have), and my numbers are not coming down.  My CA125 is currently 1895.8, the highest it has ever been.  I've been on chemo for over 2 years now and will continue to be the rest of my life, but I do think that is better than going into remission and then it come back with a vengence.  Good luck to you.

By the way, my oc was 3C.

I
was going to make a dentist appointment but I recall the doctor, when I
first started chemo 2 1/2 years ago, saying that I had to make an
appointment before the chemo started in the event my gums bled (which
they are prone to do).  I will check with my new doctor to make
sure that I do not have to be off the chemo in order to see the
dentist.  I know that I had to go off chemo for 8 weeks when I had
hernia surgery and was on tomaxifin during that time.  I also have
OC stage III and was told that it was not cureable but treatable.
Thank God that when one treatment does not work they are able to come
up with another one.  Have you been to your dentist and what did
he say about your gums?  Does he think the chemo has anything to
do with the problem.  Good luck.  Cancer will not destroy us,
it will only make us stronger.

Yes, I have been to the dentist about 8 times in 4 weeks because he was trying to get everything done while I was off chemo.  Chemo is the culprit of many of my dental problems, but I have bad teeth anyway.  Tomorrow, I have gallbladder surgery.  I have to have this done before I start back on my chemo.  My CA125 is 1895.8 so I really need to get started back asap.

Thank you again.  Good luck on your gallbladder surgery.  Hope you have a speedy recovery.
