Hi, Re: Sutent, stick with it.  The side effects are worth it.  Compared to Nexavar it does a better job. We chose Nexavar after Sutent was so miserably handicapping. But the progression was speeded up.  With Nexavar you have to watch when you eat (your stomach has to be empty for the full effect).  You might feel better but it doesn't seem to work as well.  We have exceeded the statistics on survival rates and are very pleased to be seeing another spring and summer.  Just remember, it is not a cure, it only delays the growth of the RCC by cutting off the ability to reproduce at a rapid rate, and starving the tumors with less blood supply.   We were able to travel a couple of years ago and take care of the grandchildren.  04-22-10.  A kidney was removed in 2002, adrenal metastasis in 2007- 2008-2010 on oral medication with metastasis in liver, lungs, and bone.  So far the only limits are tiredness no pain yet, but getting there with bone pain (aches).  So you have to decide yourself, a more active life or a longer life???

Hi,

I have just started Sutent 50mm 3 weeks ago, into my 4th week now. On completion I have a 2 week break, so far, little side efffects, Tast change, sore down my right side were the kidney was taken 2 months ago, other than that nothing else.

I am feeling better by doing Chee Gong, which helps with breathing and relaxing.

I hope with the sutent I can get well past the 2-3 years I was originally given

Good Luck to ALL

I was diagnosed with stage 4 RCC in 2006 with cancer on left kidney, lungs and under stomach.  They did remove my left kidney at that time.  I took 7 rounds of sutent and all tumors were gone.  Lot of side effects but was well worth it.  Do not lose hope,

my father was diagnosed as kidney cancer and lung metastasis 1 month ago. he had a surgery and his right kidney was removed. it was 10 days ago. since then he eats very less... and everything smells different than it was before... everything even his own skin, vegetables, fruits smell terrible to him... do you have any idea why is that? the next question is... i have read tens of sutent miracles... our doc is probably going to begin sutent cures in couple of days... after the pathology results... taking all these messages into consideration, can i expect such a miracle, or does it depand on the kind of tumor (like clear cells) or some other things... let me know... please...

My husband was always exercising, so he feels a little stiffled....but he does want to meet his grandchildren (my daughter is trying now). He is 61 neer smoked, not a drinker....ironically but basically in good health. He's lost a lot of weight bcause hes been on steroids to deal with his head edema....he was never heavy but at 6'1"....150 lbs is very mortifying. I feed him all sorts of nutritious foods, lots of protein, no sugar, no enriched flour. He has great color but no weight gain. Did you loose the weight? and if so, did you gain it back?

He was placed on 25mg, to be brought to 37.5 on second round to build up to 50mg.

Thank you for answering so promptly : )

My husband is taking sutent for kidney cancer with mets to his lung and brain he has just finished 1 cycle of 50mg sutent. He has also lost alot of muscle due to the steroids for the swelling in the brain. I was wondering did you husbands muscle come back after the steroids were stopped. He has also just finished 3 weeks of whole brain radiation and possible stereotactic done in a few weeks. He is having side effects eg painful and sore throat and mouth, dizziness.bleedi ng, dizziness and occasional headache.I realise you posted this in Aug 2010 but am very ineterest in how your husband is going on the sutent and his side effects.Has the sutent affected his lifestlye I would love to hear from anyone going through something similar.

Update on Wayne

Diagnosed with RCC fall of 2010 left kidney removed Nov4/10.

they left in 3 tumours in the space around the kidney, feeling it would do more harm then good to remove.

CT scan Dec 31/10 showed spread to both lungs.

He started Sutent on Jan 14/11 had side effects that were very manageable and we enjoyed life as much as possible.

April 08/11 CT scan showed small decrease in the 3 tumours and a lot of decrease to the lungs.  Continued on 50mg of Sutent only difference was 2 weeks on and 1 week off (told this should make no difference).

By the time he went for CT scan July 8/11 we knew something was very wrong.  He was having heaviness in the chest, bad cough and a lot of pain across his back.

At some point in that 3 months the Sutent had quit working and the 3 tumours were a little larger,  a mets to the spine, a big increase to the lungs and spread to the space between the left lung and the lining.  This space was full of fluid that they have tried to drain with a small tube with a nurse coming every second day, but it plugged up after 1 1/2 weeks.  This has been followed with surgery were they thought they could drain the area and put in talcum to seal it off so fluid could not build up again.  This was only partial successful because the tumours have caused pockets they could not get at.

Next step is to try Afintor to skrink these tumours and hopefully try the surgery again.  We are trying to stay positive but Sutent does not work for everyone, not sure why and I wish I did.

Hello everyone, My name is Trisha, and my husband was diagnosed with RCC in 2009! His symptoms started while we were on vacation, he started peeing blood. So we headed home and in our local hospital emergency department, thru cat scan and ultrasound, they found a football size tumor on his right kidney. We were refered to a urologist, who then booked him for a radical left nepherectomy. Sept. 13,2009 my husband had his surgery, did well thru surgery, as they told him in our follow up appointment that they got it all, and that he was 95% cured!! And would need follow ups every 6 months for at least 2 years.

Nevertheless they wanted my husband to come in for a follow up Cat scan, and low and behold they found a spot in his pancreas,  mets from the RCC, they decided to watch it for a bit and one spot turned into 4 spots, in the body, tail and 2 in the head of the pancreas.  As of Sept 16,2010 my husband had  the Wiple procedure, he is now Type 1 diabetic.  When he went for his follow up tests, they discovered his RCC has spread to his left lung. We then were referred to a thorasic surgen, who then booked my husband for the RCC mets to be removed thru laparoscopy. April 2011. It was a successful venture.

As we went for his follow up cat scans, they discovered the RCC has metastisized to his right lung, lymph nodes, and his left kidney as the choose then to tell us, that the RCC in his left kidney has been there, but they decided to keep an eye on it, well it grew, its the size of a golf ball.

After many appointments later, he was refered to our Oncologist. So basically they told us, he had between 2 weeks and 5 Years! (Its already been 2 years). They finally tell us, He is stage IV RCC. And from the research of myself and our oncologist, as well as the tumor board, but my husband has a rare type of RCC. And Sutent is the last thing. As he is palliative..

As of now Sept 28/11, My husband has started his third round of Sutent 50mg. He goes for his follow up cat scan in the next few weeks! keepin fingures crossed!!

My thoughts and prayers go to everyone!!
