I am looking into the HIFU offered in Toronto, Canada. Has anyone been involved with the Don Mills Surgical Center or Maple Leaf HIFU? We want to go there for our treatment, but want to make sure it's truly in existance before we send money. Nalamar, Maine, USA

High intensity focused ultrasound is not available in the US except for clinical trials. It does sound promising, though. Basically non-invasive, fewer side effects and some good results. I would ask for some data on effectiveness (how does it compare to other treatments that are available) and side effects. Urinary incontinence and impotentacy are the biggies for most prostate treatments. How does HIFU compare? Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Hello Alan: My wife and I had our first appointment with Dr. Orovan at the Don Mills Surgical Centre yesterday. I can certainly confirm that they exist -- the hospital is one of two private hospitals in Ontario, operating for about 40 years. I am probably going to select this method of treatment and I would certainly be comfortable in the hands of Dr. Orovan and his team. best wishes, D.George

Hello Nalamar That's wonderful. I hope your first impressions there were as good as mine. I conclude that they were, since you are scheduled for treatment. Can you tell me: have you chosen HiFu instead of surgery, or is this a follow up for failed radiation? I am trying to make my decision on what treatment to have, having only been diagnosed 6 weeks ago. If you need anything while you are in this area, feel free to email or call me. --- Message edited by CancerCompass staff: for personal protection, phone number removed. Dear George, I have opted for HIFU instead of surgery. The thought of surgery just was not pleasant. By doing HIFU now as first defense, if necessary, there is still more HIFU, surgery or radiation available down the road. Being only 48years old was a huge part in my decision. Hopefully this will be the end of the cancer & no other avenues will have to be explored at a future date. I am scheduled for treatment on Wed, Nov. 30. Since no real names, phone numbers, etc are allowed on this site, if you'd like to talk to me about this, call the Don Mills Surgical Center & ask Janice for our hotel. We'll be moving into the hotel Tues afternoon. I'll will let her know that you may be calling to request that information & give her permission to tell you. I would be interested in talking to you. All my best to you Nalamar

Hi. I'm new to the message board. 58 diagnosed with Pca t2a/b Gleason 7, PSA 9.1 Am very interested in Hifu and anxious to find out how Nalamar did on the 30th. Have just got off the phone with Dr.Garner of Don Mills. He tells me I would need TURP first in order to reduce size of prostate. Have talked to Surgeons, Cryosurgeons and Radiologist(local and proton beam out of Loma Linda). Has been an interesting journey so far but it's time to make a decision. Dennis T

We'll know after the next PSA test how every thing worked out with the HIFU. The staff in Toronto were wonderful and the doctor said every thing went "text book" - he was very confident that all is gone/well/etc. Nalamar was a little uncomfortable that night , but hasn't taken any pain meds since. We traveled by car for 17 hours to get home, broken up into two days. In 2 weeks or so, the cathater comes out then we see what happens. So far, every thing is so much better than surgery could ever be. Time will tell & we'll keep everyone updated. Good luck to all! Nalamar & Mrs. Nalamar

Can someone tell me how to connect with what is being done in Canada in terms of HIFU. Also how much does it cost there? Is Ablatherm or Sonablate used?(I cannot figure the benefit of either). Thanks. Robert of Florida

Hello, I hope this is not too invasive a request: how was the HIFU? Who was the doctor, how can I contact him? How much did it cost? Thank you. Robert of Florida
