I am a year out of treatment (39 radiation treatments and 3 Cisplatin) for base of tongue (stage 4) cancer that had spread to my neck lymph nodes, both sides. So far, the scans I have had show the cancer to be gone, but I am left with severe dry mouth. The excessive mucous seemed to go away by itself after four or five months.
I have had 8 or 9 acupuncture treatments, without any change. I am presently enrolled in a trial at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, using electrical stimulation at the acupuncture points. This trial is specifically designed to help dry mouth. So far, I can't report any results. There are still openings in the trial. If you, or anyone reading this, is interested, contact Dr. Michele Halyard at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix (480/301-8000)
Good luck and speedy recovery.
