Fundraising for support

Howdy,

My aunt was diagnosed with cancer almost exactly one year ago, and her treatment consisted of surgery and removal of her tumors.  As of November, she was reported to be completely cancer free, but one month later everything seems to have come back.  Insurance did take care of the treatment the first time, but the expenses built up from travel and lodging and childcare (She has a daughter with Rhetts syndrome which makes it impossible to just leave a regular babysitter)  Now she is having to go through chemo and face even more costs.  I decided recently to start a fundraising website for her and it has seemed to work fairly well.  Most of the money that has come in has been from friends that didn't have any idea that they could help until this was set up.  If anyone here has any ideas of how to get the word out, I would greatly appreciate it.  The website can be seen at www.brendascancerfund.com. If you visit the website, you can find my email address in the contact area.

Since most of the people on this site have loved ones or are the one with cancer, I would tell you that it is important for you to tell everyone you know that financial assistance is okay.  After talking to the people that have given donations, I have noticed that most people are very willing to help, but they have to know.  Everyone has come together because of this site, and the only thing keeping them from helping was not knowing how they could help.  Make sure you let everyone know.  The prayers alone are worth it.

Thanks,

Bryan

Hi Brian -

You have to be from Texas A & M with the howdy and Aggie.  My nephew graduated in 2007 and my niece is a student now.  Great school.

I think the fundraiser is a wonderful idea.  No one has a clue about the financial burden of this disease until they have been through it.  Even with insurance, the out of pocket is devastating.  My husband can no longer work so he doesn't get paid.  It has been a pain getting him on Social Security.  Even family members do not understand or else they do not care.  Good luck with your fundraiser and I hope your loved one does well.

God Bless you!

Yes, I am an Aggie, and finally graduated last year after 13 years of trying.

I do think the most overlooked part of a cancer patients treatment is their finances.  I don't care whether you are poor or very rich, the expense is incredible.  From travel, hotels, childcare, and many other things, it is alot of money that has to go out even before you consider the treatment aspect.  And then, the treatment is very expensive, even with insurance, which does not pay for some of the best (at least according to the doctors) treatments.

My prayers go out to you and your husband.  I hope everything gets better real soon.
