How to manage throat pain???

My husband has stage one throat cancer, he has had radiation now for  three weeks and now his throat is pretty sore.  Does anyone know what kind of food or drinks help soothe or just help with the pain???  A friend suggested to us to try sandalwood essential oil to rub daily on his neck which seems to help with the redness and irritation. Does cold or hot compresses work?  I heard that cold helps reduce inflammation and heat helps heal the tissues, but really don't want to try something that might make it worse!  Does anyone know or has tried it?  I can't believe doctors don't know what works best, they have only talked about what kind of food to eat, We would like to hear from from others on what helped them.......Thank you so much for your suggestions!   With love & Hugs (~) to all of you!  Janice  :) 

Hi - My husband has finished 10 chemo and 37 radiation for throat cancer.  He had to have a feeding tube put in because he couldn't swallow.  Before that, he was eating real soft bland foods.  It is very difficult - I hope that you husband can continue to eat because the feeding tube is the pits.  Now, my husband is going to have to do a swallow study because he says that he can't swallow.  So - that will be another bump in this road.  We bought the compresses from LindiSkin.com for the burns to his neck.  They really helped and his skin cleared up within two weeks.  He is very scarred but at least he survived the awful radiation treatments.  Good luck and God Bless You in this journey.
