LEEP Procedure

Hi All,

I just wanted to give a little insight to anyone who has already been through the LEEP procedure of who is about to go through the LEEP procedure.  I had my procedure done on 3/26/2009 and it went well because I was given general anestisia in a hospital (put to sleep).  I would recommend this to anyone getting this procedure because it takes away  a lot of the anxious feelings that you may have about this procedure and you won't know that anything is happening to you or going on around you.  In my experience ( and not to gross anyone out) I had some cramping, bloating, gas, and I am still bleeding a small amount.  I am told these things are all normal, but it still isn't pleasant.  I will get my lab results back in a week, so wish me the best, please.  I just want to share my experince with anyone who reads this and let them know that there is no shame in having HPV and that by praying, staying stress free, and thinking positively, we girls can get through anything!!!!!

I had it done under general anesthesia. When I saw the illustration on the brochure I was given, I had an anxiety attack on the spot. The first ex-doctor told me it just scooped out abnormal tissue, but according to the illustration, it was clearly going to gouge a big hole in my cervix! The brochure also said the doctor would give me shots in my cervix to numb it. Even just a simple shot for dental work hurts a LOT, for me. Did she think I was going to be awake and hold still for all of this? Absolutely not!

I don't know why doctors, in general, don't discuss a patient's pain tolerance and comfort level. Perhaps it's the insurance companies wanted doctors to be quick and cost effective about it. But it is up to us to tell a doctor what we need and to make them respect that. Each woman's body is different.

For some women, they just want the abnormal tissue removed, so it's no big deal. They go to the doctor's office, get it over with, and go home. For others, the anxiety level is such, anti-anxiety medication is best. For others, the pain tolerance and/or anxiety level is such, it's best to to it via "twilight" in-office. And for still other women, general anesthesia is best.

There are always risks with general anesthesia. But a frightened patient with no pain tolerance is going to be a bigger risk.

Well I am one of those frightened patients right now. I have my LEEP tomorrow and I am scared to death. They don't put me under and say I'm okay to drive (1 1/2 hrs.) home afterwards by myself. They make this sound like no big deal and this really is a bog deal...to me at least. Any suggestion for the anxiety?
