I had a whipple 5.07, and was back at work within 2 1/2 months. I did have to have an incisional hernia repaired in 5.08. I've felt fine, though I don't think I will get back to the energy level and general wellness that I had before all this happened.
My latest is that the doctor has found that I have a portal vein blood clot. I bein treatment with warfarin (coumadin) and a week's(?) worth of twice daily injections of lovenox.
All this happened today. I have no symptoms, feel fine. Has anyone else had this issue and how is it goig? I'd loe any information you can share.

The biggest issue I had after the surgery was extreme fatigue. It's so much more than tired ever was. I was able to eat, but didn't feel much like doing so and there were a few times that I didn't eat and became so weak that I could barely lift my head from the pillow. Make sure that your dad eats and eats healthy. The doctors recommended Ensure, but I hated the taste. I was able to tolerate Carnation Instant Breakfast ad so made sure I drank a glass or two a day. I don't know what sort of schedule of chemo and/or radiation, but I worked through both. I scheduled the chemotherapy on Thursday after work and took off Friday and stayed in bed for some or all of the weekend. I don't mean to make this sound like a walk in the park. This is serious surgery and it takes a long time to recover. One thing is not pushing to hard or thinking that everything will be as it was. Take care of your dad and yourself. and best of luck and love to us all.

Hi Krissy, This is just a layperson's understanding. I really suggest you begin talking with your dad's doctors or find someone at the hospital's support center who can help you and your family. With chemotherapy, a specific drug is given intraveneously; in my case once a week for 3 weeks, 1 week off then 3 more for 21 total. Each treatment took about 1 hour at the hospital. With radiation you get a dose targeted in the area and it took less than a minute each time; 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Everyone reacts differently to treatment & your hospital should discuss the possibilities before treatment. Go with your dad and take notes so you'll now what to expect. Hang in there, kiddo.

Krissy - Don't ever feel bad about the way you're feeling. This is tough any way you look at it. How old is your dad? I was 57 when this journey began for me and I am doing pretty darn well. Ask any questions, and if I can answer, I'm happy to do so. As for the not-cooking stuff, I didn't have much of a taste for anything for a long while. I actually couldn't stand the taste of water! Encourage your brother to get Ensure or Instant breakfast, fresh fruit, ice cream, pudding, jello or whatever else your dad will eat. Toast worked for me too. Go and see your dad and feel free to email any questions. Hang in there Krissy
