My husband had the whipple proceedure on july 20,2007. He spent two weeks in the hosp.came home on a  feeding tube ,we were not given any info for nutrition,or even any idea as to truely how long any recovery would take.By january of 2008 he was on permanent dissability. He now has renal cell cancer in his lungs. We were not referred to an oncologist until they found the renal cell cancer in his lungs. The oncologist has since put him on a pill called sutent which is not a cure, but has shrunk the tumors and kept them at bey. However at this point he is deemed terminal and the cancer is the least of our trouble at this point. My husband is in constant torment from this proceedure he was given almost two years ago, and is only getting worse. The gatrointerologist really has nothing more that he can do for my husband.... he say's,accept to keep running more and more scopes and tests only to find nothing. We feel really resentful towards the doctors because they seem to be really in the dark as to what they are putting people through with these proceedures. At this time he is getting weaker because it is hard for him to force himself to eat because he knows how much pain he will suffer, not only awful pain but horrible gas and belching, constant belching. He takes beano befor  he eats  and gas-x after eating. He is on raglin and carafate to help his digestion and a whole host of other meds, and is starting to give up.If we had known, or even been given a hint as to the suffering he would have to endure he probably would not have had the whipple,he may have died sooner but not have suffered as much. I pray for a miracle every day.He is only 55 years old and would not wish this on anyone. However I would wish that the doctors who subscribe to this proceedure would have to experience the fulleffects of this proceedure  themselves for just one week, and see if they would still feel that this is the only thing that they can do for a patient with renal cell cancer on a bile duct..

Whether 3 month schedule for scans is excessive would surely depend on how active his cancer is and whether or not it is responding to the Sutent.  However, blood work every week, unless there is something else going on like anemia, would seem like a lot.

But, the best answers to questions like this come from your doctor.  Those of us who use this site are good for support and sharing experiences but NOT for medical advise.
