My dad has bile duct cancer. We have been told it's inoperablle and he will have to go through treatments the rest of his life since theres no way to remove the cancer. I find that hard to believe when we have found many people that have had the surgrey and are still living!  My dad is curently at UAB in Birmingham, AL and we think he needs a second opinion but he seems there the best there is but we all still feel he needs to seek other help from some other Dr. If you can please respond to this message and please help us get treatment for my dad so he can be like all the others that have had the surgrey and are fine! We will travel where  ever is needed to get my dad cured from this horrible battle he's going through.

Sorry to hear about your dad, I'm a 3 year cholangiocarcinoma survivor after I was given the 3-6 month out you go speech by a Dr. at the Mayo in Scottsdale.I had surgery, oral chemo and novalis radiation,Novalis radiation I believe was the key in killing my cancer it was painless, felt a little fatigue but well worth it. Dr Nick Flore in Scottsdale AZ performed it on me and almost 3 yrs later I have no re-currence. If you can't make it to AZ you probaly have it somewhere closer to you, time to get busy cancer won't wait on you,  don't take the rejection notices get a 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinion because it's your dads life and some of these Drs. just don't want to deal with it.  If you haven't found anybody yet, call Dr. Brink in Phoenix(surgeon) or Dr Flores in Scottsdale(radiologis).

My sister recently underwent 11 1/2 hours surgery to remove a tumor in her bile duct at Wake Forest/Babtist Hospital in Winston Salem, NC. Her surgeon said it was one of the most difficult surgeries he's performed but the good thing is they were able to get the tomor. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread to some of her lymph nodes and she does have to start a very aggressive chemo/radiation treatment in the next few weeks. I'm praying that she responds well and it kills all the cancer cells. I hope your father is doing well and don't give up!!

Hi~

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad.  I know exactly how you feel. My Dad, too, was diagnosed in March 2008.  He was a candidate for the whipple surgery and did well for a year.  With that said, a minority of patients with bile duct cancer are eligible for surgery...it depends on the location of the tumor, size, invasiveness, etc.  It's always worth getting a second opinion.  My Dad was treated at Mayo in Rochester, MN, by a phenomenal surgeon named Dr. Nagorney.

I wish you and your Dad much luck.

Marcie

Please get a second opinion.  I'm the sister of icare24 and had the 11 1/2 hour surgery at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.   I had the Whipple procedure, they took 1/2 of my pancreas and 18 lymph nodes.  The cancer was in 4 of the 18 lymph nodes.  Dr. Russell Howerton & his team at Wake Forest University (which is part of NC Baptist) are excellent doctors!  I cannot say enough good things about them and the hospital.  All the nurses were excellent.   I am starting my 3rd week of chemo (5FU - 24 hours a day) and radiation treatments (5 days a week).  After that I will have 8 weeks of Gemzar.  I'm feeling good, staying active and eating well.  I started drinking the Essaic tea a couple of weeks ago.  I wish your father all the best and pray that he'll be able to get the best treatment he needs.
