Hi Markis

I had kidney cancer with mets in my lungs and a very painful tumour in my ankle. I was put onto Interferon which I had to inject 3 times a week. After a couple of weeks it reduced the size of the tumour in my ankle which made a big difference to the pain although I did also have Tramadol painkillers.

I had my kidney removed at the end of January and the tumour on the kidney was gone as was those on my lungs. There is also no sign of a tumour in my ankle so it is possible for some of the treatments to work.

Keep hopeful.

Steve

Dear Makis

I suspect the next drug would either be Nexavar (sorafenib) or Torisel (temsorilumus). Possibly Torisel as it's done by intravenous injection while in hospital (for a day visit I think, as it takes a while for the drug to go into the body). Sadly it too has side effects which are not pleasant.

May I take the opportunity to recommend you join a very good group for kidney cancer patients and caregivers, which is called kidney-onc. You can join on http://cancerguide.org/kofaq/

Not only is it full of excellent information and experience, but I know there are at least two fellow Hellenes there (one is called Georgias), so I'm sure you will feel at home, and may find it easier to communicate directly.

All the very best, Julie.

hi Makis,

Regarding medication for you mother:

The FAD had approved new medication for advanced kidney cancer made by the pharmaceutical company name Novaetis. The drug is  Afinitor [everolimus]. This drug is in phase III trail and received its approval as a second – line treatment when treatment has failed with sutunt [sunitinib] and nexavar[ sorafenib].

Afinitor is an oral mTOR [mammalian target of rapamycin] inhibitor that blocks cellular metabolism, growth, proliferation and angiogenesis.

Novartis has filed for Afinitor for approval  in EU and Japan. According to an article in farmafocus, the same drug is used in EU  under the name of Certican  for the management of organ transplant rejection.

I hope this information helps you. I am sure that Novartis has a representative in Greece. If not you can send an e-mail to the head quarter in Switzerland and many a time their representative will call you. I have experience with them already about a different drug.

Best of luck

Keep in touch
