After 16 Chemos

I did not post since June 26, 05. Thank you for 8 responses. After 8 chemos CAT did not find tumor in colon but characterized my liver tumor condition as "stabile". However PET, made one week later, found "marked improvement" in liver also. After this good news i continued chemos until November. CAT scan in November showed again that liver tumors are "stabile". In contrast to this, PET brought bed news: "recurrence of tumors in liver" and some activities in colon. All blood characteristics are still oK. So i have reached resistance level for this chemo composition ( first chemo line). Lines 2 and 3 might give me 10-12 months more. Alternatives to chemos that, i've heard, are: 1. Tumor immunization (only trials, i think) 2. Introhepatic pump 3. Chemoimbolization That is all what i know for numerous metastases tumors in liver. Appreciate a lot if somebody can provide any information about results of application of 1-3 or can suggest something else appropriate for the case of numerous metastases in liver including small ones. I have stage IV colon cancer. I had five tumors in my liver. I had a hepatic pump for 4 months with infusion therepy directly in the pump. My liver tumors reduced by 50% so I could then have a liver resection. Now, two years later I have no cancer in my colon or liver. I do however, have lung mets. anyway, I would recommend the pump as I had no side effects from treatment. Risk is high but I think it will help with your cancer. RW

Ablation

Have you ever heard of ablation? If liver tumors can not be removed they can be " microwaved" high frequency waves that bacially fry the tumor. Also, there are now radiation spheres that can be directly placed in the liver to kill the tumor and any remaining cells. Let me know

Dear Heidi, Thank you very much for your response. I asked several doctors about radiofrequency ablation. All answers were like this:"It is not selective and it does not work when you have numerous small mets". Would appreciate a lot for any reference on selective radiofrequency ablation. as well on " radiation spheres" that i have never heard about. Mark

Dear Roni, Thank you for ecouraging information. My questions are: 1. Can hepatic pump be combined with conventional chemo? 2. If it is not secret what kind of drugs have been used in your pump? 3. What is limitations on physical activities have been associated with hepatic pump? ( Could you sleep in any position? Did you feel it when you were walking?) Thanks again for information and good luck in your fight. Mark

Mark: you really get used to the pump and sleeping is not a problem. I virtually had no side effects from the chemo injected in to the pump, They used 5FU and Leucovorin. I had chemo into the pump for 4 months. I did not have other IV chemo while using the hepatic pump. HOpe that helps. RW

OK, my dad had dozens of liver mets on all lobes of his liver. After chemo these were reduced, we were sent to an awesome doctor in Pittsburgh - Dr. David Geller - an amazing liver surgeon who did a surgery that I know from research and talking to other doctors, not many would have attempted. My father had all of his lesions (60% of his liver removed) off and dr. Geller had a pathologist with him scan the remaining liver with the best of ultrasounds to be sure no others were buried.....he is amazing and if others tell you it isn't possible, at least try to get a phone or email consult with Dr. Geller.....he is amazing...Tell him Michelle sent you! He's helped many folks that I've informed via this board!~
