Update on Smokey

I haven't checked in for a while and thought I would give those of you who were kind enough to reply to my first email an update. Unfortunately, the metroxidine and piroxicam did not work - the cancer is growing and he now has an enlarged lymph node. We never knew for certain if the cancer was tcc or prostatic because nothing could be biopsied, so the vet had to guess. The oncologist is changing him to carboplatin and previcox. He has had one treatment with the new protocol and starts the new anti-inflammatory tomorrow. He has multiple bladder stones, which are more troublesome to me than the cancer since I know a blockage can lead to death pretty quickly. His urine is often bloody but his bloodwork does not show him to be anemic. He also is straining alot to urinate or have a bowel movement. I am just so upset. I keep thinking that if I had only caught it sooner. I just am not feeling very hopeful. One thing I have been wondering - months ago - almost a year actually, Smokey's back left leg would shake and sometimes give out on him when we would walk around the block. At the time, I called the vet and they said that it was probably related to the heat - now I wonder if it was related to the cancer - did anyone see anything similar in their dog? I feel as if there must have been other hints that I missed... maybe it can be a learning experience for others. We will continue to do what is available....as long as he tolerates it. Would love to have him around for a while longer but it isn't looking good.
