I was diagnosed with cervical cancer on March 12. I am having a radical abdominal hysto. with bilateral salpingo- oophrectomy on May 11th. I am 36 years old and losing my mind with all that is going on. The doc. says she doesn't know yet if I will need cemo or radiation. I'm wondering if I should have it to make sure they got everything and to help to prevent it coming back. The more I look things up on the internet the more worried i get.

Trehouse is a good person to ask, as she is a cancer survivor. I'm sure she would be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

The doctors will let you know if you will need chemo and radiation.  I had a radical hysterectomy and removal of my ovaries and I had 6 weeks of radiation and chemo was once a week.  Two years later my cancer came back.  I just finished chemo, I had 6 treatments and I am happy to say my cancer is gone.  this is a very aggressive cancer and will eventually come back.  It is not curable, but it is treatable.  You will be fine.

Don't worry but be prepared.  I was diagnosed with Stage 2A in January.  went in for radical hysterectomy (laproscopic - robot assisted) in Feb. My hospital (johns hopkins) had the ability to biopsy on the table.  They saw a funny-looking lymph node and it came back positive.  They had removed an ovary and fallopian tube and then aborted the operation.  they also said the tumor was larger than they thought.  I woke up thinking I would have everything done and learned the news that radiation and chemo awaited me.  It was frustrating b/c i just wanted the cancer out.  I was prepared to possibly do chemo and radiation anyway but I wasn't prepared for the fact that they wouldn't be able to do the surgery.  The lymph nodes didn't show up on the PET scan.  Be prepared for possible chemo and radiation.  They should know what they are dealing with when they open you up. I had laproscopic so the recovery was a little shorter.  THey will biopsy everything they take out of you and know if anything spread and then go from there.  Don't worry about the surgery itself - it is quite common.  I am done radiation next week and did fine..some stomach side effects but otherwise not hard.
