Please help make these next few days easier...

We are waiting through what is sure to be one of the longest weekends of our lives.  My dear brother, age 40 with 4th child due in July, was diagnosed today with renel cell cancer (95% certain).  They are very early on in the testing.  A PET scan and biopsy will come next week so we do not know the stage or the severity yet.  All we know is that CT scan showed a tumor that was 12cm and they did not see any other abnormal growths in the pelvic region.  From my research, I am scared beyond belief because the size seems so large.  He seems to be one of those cases without symtoms until he recently noticed blood in his urine.  This also frightens me, as most of the case scenarios seem to stumble across their diagnosis earlier by accident.  I can't imagine that such a large tumor is at an early stage.  I'm also noticing in my research that if the cancer has spread, that radiation and chemo are not usually effective on this type of cancer.  That was the doctor's recommendation to him if it had spread.  Can anyone offer me any information that will make this weekend easier for us.

Thank you

Hi I was diagnosed on the 27th December 2007 with a 7.5cm tumour on my left kidney. I also had several secondary tumours on my lungs and a 5.5cm tumour on the bone in my left ankle. The pain caused by the tumour in my ankle is what made me go to the Doctors and after testing me for arthritis an MRI scan showed a tumour in my ankle. I am 48 years old.

Normally the Oncologist wants to remove the kidney but because I could not walk they put me onto 'Interferon' which I had to inject 3 times a week for 4 months.

The tumour in my ankle soon began to shrink and a CT scan in April & September showed a reduction in the tumour on my kidney and those on my lungs.

I had my left kidney removed at the end of January this year and the biopsey showed all of the cancer had been destroyed.

Hi Sweet Afton,

There are other targeted therapies that are used for kidney cancer.  I am on Sutent which is the first line therapy for RCC.  I still call it a "chemo" pill.  There are lots of options so stay strong & positive.  After two treatments my tumour is shrinking.

All the best and you will get through this weekend.

Joanne

Sweet Afton:

On September 29, 1996 (that's right 1996) I had my left kidney removed which included an 8.5cm rcc tumor. Since then I have had met surgery on rt lung; RF tumor ablation rt kidney, and have just completed my 18th cycle on Sutent. The tumors are still present in my lungs; but, I'm still here!  I'll be 82 in July.

Never give up.
