My mom has breast cancer and NO MED INSURANCE!

Hi my mom was just diagnose with breast cancer and she has no medical insurance. This is very scary, we need to know she will be treated, and that she is not going to lose her home, or go bankrupt.  Can anyone PLEASE give us some insight on what to do. She is willing to pay whatever she can to get the surgery and treatment, but she really cant afford much. She currently is already living pay check to pay check. We need help, I have researched and had no luck. I don’t even know where to start to be honest. But I have called several places, and no results. It's getting close, she just had her MRI done, and we are waiting to see if the cancer is in the limp nods and if it has spread or not.  Anyway, can anyone please help?

She lives in San Diego county, and goes to a Sharp Hospital affiliated Doctor. If that helps. We have contacted the hospital and are waiting to see if they have any payment plans.

If anyone has any input it would be GREATLY appreciated!

dear amandenski----so sorry to hear about your mom.no medical insurance is certainly a major concern.i personally would love to hear of even one oncologist who treated such cases as your mom for free.how nice that would be to hear.a nice story to read while you wait to see your own oncologist,a posted note in mds office.how about it all you oncologists out there?treating perhaps two people a year.poor souls who are in dire need.i do have a few suggestions.call the breast cancer foundation and the cancer society as well.also the breast cancer survivorship society.the breast cancer groups are real tight.maybe they have charitable organizations for women in moms boots.finally i know chemo drugs should mom need them are very expensive.if mom needs them go on=line.many pharmacietical companies will provide them for free pending info from doctors.in case oncolgists don"t tell you this.do all this research prior to appointment.find out what usually is given for b.c. treatments.you must find compassionate md willing to work with you. then go on line to see what pharma.company manufactures the chemo drugs mom would potentially be given.perhaps a town fund raiser?anyone you know in town politics?they could be great in that area.is mom old enough for medicare?you can own your own home and still be able to get medicade BUT your income can"t be more then about 800 dollars.a monthjoke.what a tragedy!an american can"t get medical care yet we must pay for immigrants all over this country every day.finally saw a show were an american went to canada, had cancer, and got free treatment THERE.the story was included in michael moores latest movie, sorry can"t remember the name.still think your best bet would be all the breast cancer networks..finally get a couple of notebooks and document EVERYTHING!your mom is so LUCKY to have you!hang in there--all will be o.k.  fondly, from another cancer survivor, stayin alive

I wanted to first say how sorry I am to hear about your mom, I just got off the phone with my mom's oncologist and the news was that the lesions on her her liver were larger and in two months the one her in her lung grew a lot, so we are back to square 1... She was first diagnosed in Sept 2008 and I cannot believe someone that was so healthy is not looking so different...I had the same problem my mom had no insurance and she needed surgery, the hospital cannot deny you medical treatment so when she had surgery they had a social worker come and fill out the applications for my mom, they waived the entire amount due to low income since my dad is retired and mom could not work after surgery....I got her placed on Medicaid and with the hospitals financial assistance we got through until her Medicare arrived due to her turning 65 last month... Keep the faith since this is last thing you lose.... I wish your mom lots of health and please keep us posted on her progress....

Hi  Amendenski– I’m sorry to hear that in addition
to going through treatment your mother has to worry aout managing care costs
and maintaining her day-to-day expenses. I know it was extremely stressful for
my family – I went through treatments for Hodgkin’s Disease, and then my father
went through treatments for colon cancer, and navigating insurance, co-pays and
coverage was awful for all of us. I did a recent post on managing the costs of
treatments that may be helpful for you – http://blog.cincovidas.com/managing-the-costs-of-treatment
. Please let me know if this helps.

Love,
strength and survival, Britta

I recommend for her to talk to a county social worker. Depending on her circumstances, she may qualify for short-term disability, financial assistance, and/or a state Medicaid program. The social worker may be able to provide her with a short-term disability enrollment form, and she may need to have part of it completed by a physician. There may be some other municipal, state-wide, or national charitable organizations which she can apply for. The social worker may help her with this as well.

While Medicaid may certainly limit your choice of hospitals or physicians, it may be prudent to get insured now. Regardless of stage, the definitive treatment for breast cancer (which may involve surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy) and even surveillance after treatment will be very expensive without insurance.
