lymph node? or fatty tissue?

I wonder if somebody might be able to help.....

About 6 weeks ago a lump appeared on my left shoulder/neck.  it is smooth feeling, and moves around under my skin.  It feels to me to be about one and a half cm across it's width and length, but I can't tell how deep. I left it for a week, to see if it would go away, and went to the doctors when it didn't. She arranged an ultrsound scan. I had to wait for a little over four weeks, and in that time I looked on the internet a lot to see what it might be.  Looking at pictures and reading what other people had written, I worked out that it might be a swollen supraclavicular lymph node.  Obviously there are lots of causes of that.  The area around the lump (although not the lump itself) has become uncumfortable, and sometimes a bit achy and tender.  It is often more swollen around the lump, although the lump itself doesn't seem to have changed very much in the 6 weeks.  I have a tight feeling across the front of my neck, and my neck generally looks and feels a little swollen.  When I went for my scan, I was surprised to see "thyroid" on the screen next to my name.  The radiologist told me that my lump looked like fatty tissue.  It was a solid black oval shapeon the screen. She scanned the other side (right), and I saw on the screen a much smaller solid black oval shape in the same place.  She changed the picture on the screen so that it was coloured, and she highlighted several red/yellow/orange patches on the left side that were pulsing.  She looked at the front of my neck, too.  I know that I need to wait for a doctor to look at the scan, and for my GP to speak to me, rather than take what the radiologist told me as the diagnosis.  Does anybody know how different a lymph node and fatty tissue look on an ultrasound scan?  Or what the pulsing bits mean?  If it is a fatty thing, should I have the smaller one on the other side, too?  I would appreciate any information. Thank you very much: Amanda

Well...... after the radiologist told me she thought my lump was fatty tissue, I left it just over a week before I phoned my GP to get the official results.  I was a bit surprised to be told that I have to have an MRI scan on 3rd June.  I haven't spoken to a doctor since the very first appintment all those weeks ago, so I'm still not sure what's being looked for.  Still; hopefully not too long now!!

Greetings,

I am having the exact same thing happening except an MRI has not been ordered yet. My left lymph node is swollen and the ultrasound showed that it was reactive and was "fatty" on the outside. I wanted to check with you to see what your final outcome was. Hope to hear from you soon!

Take care,

Roger

I have the same thing...a large hump on the left side of my neck and a little smaller hump on the right side.  I have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism and a past history of pituitary tumor.  I'm having a CT scan of the neck and chest in a couple of days.

I have two masses on the right side of my neck.  I was sent to endocrinologist dec 20th because my gp thought it was something to do with parathyroid.  But it wasn't.  the endo set me up for thyroid scan and other test.  the scan showed I have an 8mm solid mass with color flow under the right ear and a 10x 4 x 14 mm nodular density mass in the right lateral neck.  I am having to go to see a general surgeon for biopsies on the 25th.  I am nervous about that because of the location of the masses because of my arteries being in those regions.  Both masses had color flow which no one has taken time to explain except to say masses may be malignant and the biopsy would say if it is lymph nodes or not.  My thyroid was fine.   I have had the masses for quite some time and the only reason I went to the doctor was because of extreme fatigue.  I wish you well on your journey and everything turns out well.   Any information any of you can give to me would be thankful.  I wish my doctors would have sent me for a cat scan or a mri before sending me to a surgeon just for more information. I wanted to share my story with you to compare.  I will be following your post and wish for you only the best.  Janey

Are you in the US? If so; find a large university hospital & make an appointment with the ENT department. They will get to the bottom of it. Local doctors don't see a lot of head & neck cancer & will run you around. Also make a post in the head & neck section. link below

Well, count me as NEW PATIENT!!  Even tho I had a surprise malignant Kidney (grade 3) removed about 3 years ago, at my first yearly cat scan checkup, my oncologist asked me how I felt--"OK"---whatever--I have beens so FATIGUED for the past few years I haven't been able to clean house etc--I had gotten into some stinging Nettell weeds and my hands have been covered with severe, DEEP, itchy and burning, sores so blamed it on thatthey are getting better after 71/2 years, FINALLY a DR believed me (not just nerves--)and the same week my oncologist says I now have enlarged nocules (3.5) under the right arm, 1. ? under the left arm and one in the center of my chest.   I have been having pain in my former surgery sites in my upper left rib cage amd then in my right side too---my appendicitis is gone (16 yrs) now about 8 0 years old----constipated more than usual---I had a PET scan \done Wed. so now the waiting game????!!!!!  They made me an appt ONE YEAR from now---before the Pet scan was done----does anyone have any ideas of what it might be??  Oncologist said it was a DIFFERENT cancer than what was in my kidney or it would have gone to my lungs, which are OK< but I am so short of breath---been on oxygen for 2 years--coming out of a deep, clinical depression too--If I don't hear soon---like next week, I will call them!  Does anyhone have any ideas of what kind I might be dealing with this time??

I know this is an old thread however i thought i would see if you are still on this board. I too had a a pituitary tumor and had it removed a few years ago. It has started to grow back but no changes for 2 years. i also have s/s of hypothyroidism however that is where it ends...all my labs are technically "normal" some almost over the high others almost below the low but all within normal range. I have noticed over the last month edema of the lower legs 3+ pitting. and a lump on the side of my left neck. i had an "unofficial" ultrasound (i float there sometimes) it shows fatty infultrate into the node but no increase in blood flow. my MD dismisses it all but I can't help but feel there is more and no one takes me seriously because my labs are "normal" but even before they seen a bleed around my tumor and removed it all those labs were  "normal" too...just seeing what came of yours. if you would like to share.
